About this ebook

Historical western romance short story.

Hannah Demsey never thought she would ever marry. Born without her little fingers on both hands, she thought no man would ever want her.

When her Pa died, she almost gave up any hope of a normal life. He always went to town with her and to church, but when he died, she avoided the town and the people who talked about her.

When her uncles told her about sending for a mail order husband for her, she was furious with their shennanigans. Determined to send Justin Handley away when he arrived, she was unprepared to find her heart going out to his crippled son, Joey, and to find herself drawn to a man who didn't let her imperfections bother him.

Justin Handley had searched for a woman to become his wife and a mother to his son, Joey. When he answered Hannah's uncle's letters and met Hannah, he found his heart smitten with her beauty and grace. Her kindness to his son and her loving ways soon embedded her in his heart. If only he could convince her they could both have the family they always wanted along with a love that would last a lifetime.

A Husband For Hannah - Cia Leah

    Chapter One

Hannah Dempsey scattered feed to the chickens, keeping a close eye on her two uncles sitting on the porch reading a letter.  She didn’t know what was so important that they weren’t attending to the many chores that needed doing, but she was going to find out.

She set the chicken feed pail down and went to see what was so interesting.  You two have been sitting there with that letter for almost two hours now.  You’re both behind on chores and I’ve got to start supper.  Her Uncle Fester glanced up at her as he stuffed the letter into his shirt pocket.

Now don’t go getting all uppity, Hannah.  Your Uncle Grady and I have a lot to attend to before tomorrow. Fester said, rubbing his whiskers.

Like what?  She placed both hands on her hips and glared at him.

We’re going to have a visitor tomorrow.  Nice fellow.  He will be stayin’ with us for awhile.

    Staying here?

Fester rose to his feet.  Yep, but don’t worry, he can sleep in the bunkhouse with us.

And just who is this man?

    His name’s Justin Handley.

Is he an old friend of yours?

Not really, but he’s a real nice fella.

Hannah shook her head, swiping back a loose tendril of hair that fell across her face.  If you two are up to some kind of mischief, I swear I’m going to hogtie you both and keep you in that bunkhouse.  Where did you meet him?  She saw Grady get up and step off the porch.

Don’t you go frettin’ none, Hannah.  We know what we’re doin’ and Justin will be here tomorrow morning.  We’ll get the chores done and the bunkhouse cleaned up before it’s time to eat.

She watched Grady and Fester walk off to the barn.  Just what were they up to?  Shaking her head, she went into the house and started supper.  She had chicken on boiling and made the dumplings to drop in the broth after she took the chicken out to fry up.

As she worked, she couldn’t help think back to when her Pa was alive.  The ranch prospered under his care, but his death brought many a hardship to Hannah and her Uncles came and stayed with her.  She loved them both with all her heart, but they were a handful.  You’d think at their age, they’d be more grown up, but she had to keep an eye on them like she would a kid.

She knew they worried about her and what would happen to her if they died.  She was almost twenty-five and not married with any other family.  She sighed as she placed the chicken in the iron skillet.  Just because she was born without a little finger on both hands, they thought her a cripple.  She wasn’t, but sometimes when she was in bed at night, she wished she were born normal, then always admonished herself because her Ma died giving birth to her.

Her Pa loved her and she knew that.  He was always there for her when she cried when some of the other children in school called her eight fingers Hannah.  If it weren’t for Beth Ramsey, she wouldn’t have had a friend at all.  She pulled herself back to the present when Fester came into the house.

We got most of the work done.  Grady will be along in a minute.  He’s making up one of the cots in the bunkhouse for Justin.

Hannah turned and shook her wooden spoon at him.  If you don’t tell me what is going on, I am going to make you and Grady and this Justin fellow cook your own meals in the bunkhouse.

Don’t be like that, Hannah.  You’ll like Justin, and besides, you know Grady and I can’t cook worth spit.

Maybe that’s one way to keep you two old coots out of trouble.

    Cooking?

Making you cook your own food, do your own wash, and get your chores done on time.

Ah now, you wouldn’t do that.  We’re the only family you got and we love you.

She shook her head, set the table, and put the food in bowls and set them on the table.  Cut the bread, Uncle Fester.  I hear Grady coming in.  She poured them each a cup of coffee and sat down at the table as Grady came in and pulled out his chair.  She said grace, and then looked at each one of them.  Tell me the truth.  Who is this Justin?  I don’t want any tall stories either.

Fester stared at the fried chicken, licking his lips.  Can’t we eat first?

She leaned forward and glared at him.  Does that mean you will tell me who this man is if I let you eat?  She saw Fester look at Grady.  Grady nodded, but the expression on his face was a dire one.  What on earth were they up to?

"We’ll tell you, but you got to promise not to be mad at us.  We’re only looking out for your best interests and I want a big
