    INTRODUCTION

This is the first book of a new series titled, The Word of God Library. God is leading me to have a few commentaries published that I have done over the years of various books of God’s word, the Bible. Lord willing, this one should be followed by God’s Second Letter to The Thessalonians, then God’s Gospel Account Given Through Matthew, God’s Gospel Account Given Through John, God’s First Letter To The Corinthians, God’s Second Letter To The Corinthians, and God’s Word To The Scattered Believers As Given Through James. These commentaries are intended as devotional in nature and to be as practical as possible, to help believers live out their faith in these last days of the present age.

And what would be of great value in knowing at the outset here is that we will be making reference in this book to the four ages of time and also to the first and second coming from Heaven to earth of God’s precious Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, including the mention of the first and second stage of His second coming. If there are any readers who are not familiar with the four ages of time, or in regards to the two comings of God’s precious Son, you may want to read about these two topics in the Addendum before beginning the book. Then when one encounters these terms in the text, it will be far easier to follow the truth that this being expounded there. There is also a third section of the Addendum dealing with how one may have a personal relationship with God, if there are any readers who may not already have that vital relationship.

What should also be mentioned before closing this Introduction is that after completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in Project Engineering and Management in the Corporate offices of a large utility, God called His servant as a non-denominational evangelist in early 1999 and then sent him out over 3000 miles, away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, which is where His servant has been and is still serving Him as evangelist, counselor, author, editor, and publisher. The author is a widower with three adopted children, now married.

    CHAPTER ONE

    1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

As we begin to devotionally look at God’s first letter to the Thessalonians, we note that God gave this letter to the believers living in Thessalonica through the apostle Paul, based on what we read at 1 Thessalonians 1:1, Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We note from Acts 17:1-4 that it was during the apostle Paul's second journey from his home church at Antioch in Syria that he came to Thessalonica, being at that time accompanied by Silas, [1] Now when they had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. [2] And according to Paul's custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, [3] explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ. [4] And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of the God-fearing Greeks and a number of the leading women. And so we see here that some people at Thessalonica believed as the apostle Paul preached the gospel to them – which is always God’s good news regarding His Son - with these new believers then being the local church that we see being addressed here at 1 Thessalonians 1:1, who are the recipients of this letter from God, as given through the apostle Paul. We should also note that Thessalonica was a city in Macedonia, just north of Greece (noting Acts 20:1-6 and Acts 27:2), which was also part of a Roman province at the time.

We are also told at 1 Thessalonians 1:1 above that the apostle Paul is said to be with Silvanus and Timothy as God sends this letter to the believers in Thessalonica through him. What is important to be aware of here is that the name Silvanus is the Latinized version of the Greek name Silas.. Therefore, Silvanus and Silas is the same person wherever these names appear in Scripture. However, what should be further noticed here is that the name Silas is used only by Luke in the book of Acts (noting Acts 15:22,27,32,34,40; 16:19,25,29; 17:4,10,14,15; 18:5), while the name Silvanus is found only in the letters of the New Testament, being used by the apostle Paul at 2 Corinthians 1:19; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:1; and by the apostle Peter at 1 Peter 5:12. We know from Acts 15:32 that Silas was a New Testament prophet, which after the close of the canon of the New Testament, this being by the end of the first century AD, these became shepherd/teachers in local churches, as indicated by what God tells us at Ephesians 4:11. And from 1 Timothy 4:5, we know that Timothy was an evangelist, which is what apostles were called after the close of the canon of the New Testament, again noting Ephesians 4:11.

And when God says here, the church of the Thessalonians, He is referring to all the believers residing in Thessalonica, who made up the local church there, further noting here that all these are said to be in God The Father and The Lord Jesus Christ. Since there is an indivisible union between The precious Father and The precious Son, then when one comes to know God in a personal relationship at salvation, one is spiritually united with The Father and The Son by The Holy Spirit! And so that is what the word in refers to here, namely the baptism of The precious Holy Spirit is inferred (noting 1 Corinthians 12:12,13), whereby a person is immersed in the spiritual body of our precious Lord Jesus Christ, where The precious Father ever lives by The precious Holy Spirit.

What is also critical to see here, and also to continually practice this in one's life, is the proper Biblical way to view The precious Father and The precious Son, which is that The Father is referred to as God, while His precious Son, Jesus Christ, is referred to as Lord. What would be helpful to ever remember here is that God The Father always lives in or indwells His Son by The Holy Spirit; always works through His Son by The Holy Spirit; and always speaks through His Son by The Holy Spirit, also noting what God tells us at Colossians 2:9, For in him (The Son) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Then we note that the apostle Paul is led of God to mention grace and peace, which is what every believer enters into at the very moment of salvation - which is when one personally comes to know God, at that moment receiving the forgiveness of sins and eternal life, for believing in God through faith in His precious Son - noting here for instance what God says about grace and peace at Romans 5:1,2, [1] Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have PEACE with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, [2] through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this GRACE in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. The word grace here is Charis in the Greek and refers to God's unmerited favor, which rests upon every believer from the moment of salvation onwards.

And the word peace here is Eirene in the Greek and is used in two separate contexts relating to both God and believers in the New Testament. At Romans 5:1 above, we have mention of peace WITH God, which a believer has from the moment of salvation onwards, due to having gone from being under the wrath of God to being under the grace of God, noting Ephesians 2:3 with Romans 6:14, by virtue of having had all of one's sins forgiven by God for believing that God's precious Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, bore one's sins at the cross of Calvary, also taking upon Himself there all of God's wrath that was due every human being. Therefore, at the moment of salvation, a believer moves from an experience of fear of God, due to one's sins, to having peace with God, due to one's sins being forgiven, so that the believer now no longer fears the wrath of God in judgment.

The other context of peace the believer has with God at salvation is seen at Philippians 4:6,7, where God says to us, [6] Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace OF God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. And so we see here that at the moment of salvation, a believer also comes to experience in one's life the peace of God, which is the reverse of being constantly in a state of anxiousness as an unbeliever. So instead of being anxious, God wants His own to live after salvation by the rest of spirit, soul, and body that the peace of God brings.

Before going further here, it would be beneficial to note that one makes peace with God at the moment of salvation, which is a one time event which never needs repeating. However, a believer can lose the peace of God after salvation, which occurs the moment a believer sins and until that sin is confessed to God. Therefore, the peace of God is to be seen as the fruit which God manifests in the life of a believer (noting Galatians 5:22), as a believer walks with God with no known unconfessed sins in one's life, thereby only living by God's righteousness. Similarly in regards to the child of God living under grace, that is, under the unmerited favor of God, this will only be interrupted in the life of a believer when one sins against God and until that sin is confessed to God, noting 1 John 1:9.

And because of the importance of the grace and peace of God in the life of every believer, we often see God leading those through whom He gave the letters of the New Testament to open their letters to believers with a similar greeting, as the apostle Paul does here at 1 Thessalonians 1:1, noting also Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:3; 2 Corinthians 1:2; Galatians 1:3; Ephesians 1:2; Philippians 1:2; Colossians 1:2; 2 Thessalonians 1:2; 1 Timothy 1:2; 2 Timothy 1:2; Titus 1:4; Philemon 1:3; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Peter 1:2; and Revelation 1:4.

And since we mentioned a number of times that this was God’s word, even though He used various male believers to write it down, we should note what God says at both 2 Timothy 3:16, ALL SCRIPTURE IS INSPIRED BY GOD (that is, ‘God-breathed,’ in terms of coming directly from God) and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness…, and also 2 Peter 1:20,21, [20] But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, [21] for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, BUT MEN MOVED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT SPOKE FROM GOD. So before we go further, it is very important that we realize that what we have in the Bible is the word of God, which He gave to mankind in time through human vessels, chosen of God to do so!

As we continue in 1 Thessalonians chapter 1, we note that the apostle Paul is led of God to give thanks for the believers in Thessalonica, also being led of God to give reasons why he is so thankful, noting three of those reasons in what God now tells us at 1 Thessalonians 1:2,3, [2] We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention of you in our prayers; [3] constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father… And so we see at 1 Thessalonians 1:2 here that the apostle Paul shares with the believers at Thessalonica that when he is in prayer with God The precious Father, which access is always through His precious Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by the enablement of The precious Holy Spirit (noting John 14:6 with Romans 8:26), he has the God-given desire to give thanks for these believers at Thessalonica - whom the apostle Paul remembers as a local church here and not by name individually, when he says here making mention of you in our prayers - with the word our indicating that Silas and Timothy were
