Chapter One
Present day
Jack's back was to the wall. There were zombies on all sides of her. For the first time in her life she could see no way out. Her hand slid down to cover her bulging belly. She was eight and a half months pregnant. Logic suggested she shouldn't be out hunting zombies. But the reality was Magnus Wellsby, also known as Squiggly to her because of his curly hair, was missing and she needed to find the father of her child. While their relationship was complicated especially now with the baby, Jack wanted him back in her life and if she had to kick some zombie head in to do it, she would.
She knew the zombies had him. Although she had pissed off a lot of people in her life, the only ones who held a grudge were the zombies. They were expert grudge holders. Jack had a similar character flaw. Except I don't smell. The zombies emitted an odor of rotting flesh.
Jack adjusted her grip on the long bladed knife she held in her free hand. She would have preferred an axe. It was her weapon of choice when dealing with zombies. But she'd promised Squiggly she would quit zombie killing with that particular weapon. He actually wanted her to stop all zombie killing during her pregnancy. For Jack, that wasn't an option. They were a menace to society and it was her job, pregnant or not, to remove them from her hometown, the tropical city of Cairns, in Far North Queensland, Australia.
For god sake rest, Katz. While I know you think you're invincible and at times I almost believe it, you do have our baby on board and normal women don't carry an axe when pregnant.
Ah, but then we both know I'm not normal.
Quite.
That was the Squiggly response to most things. 'Quite.' It meant nothing and yet at the same time everything.
Damn, I miss that inscrutable bastard. Jack gritted her teeth and looked at her nemesis. Morcomb Sprout with his long dark hair, burning black eyes and grey tinged skin. Long ago, Magnus Wellsby had saved him from a full on zombie attack leaving him part human. Part zombie. Complete freak and malicious toe rag. She wanted him dead once and for all. A girl's do what a girl's gotta do,
she muttered, adjusting her stance, one foot was in front and one behind, to support whatever would happen next. And something will. It always does with these arseholes.
I believe you're trapped like a rat, Katz.
The zombie smirked at her.
Jack snorted in derision. By a rotting, genetic freak like you? Never. I'm going to kill you tonight.
Her battle with Sprout had been going on too long. She knew once he was dead it'd be easier to rid Cairns of the zombies once and for all. If they had no leader, they were just an unthinking rabble that was easy to destroy.
He tilted his head to one side and assessed her with a sly smile. That will be awkward for you.
How so?
His smile made her stomach roll, almost as if her baby inside was also sickened by the zombie. While he looked rock star-like dressed in the dramatic contrasts of red and black, with the clawed metal hand piece he had taken to wearing over his right hand which had enhanced his glamour with the public, evil still oozed out of his pores. Like all zombies, he'd once been human. The incomplete attack on him had left him half rotting flesh with the sheer rat cunning of a human being. It was a deadly combination. He had the ability to command the mindless zombie hoards and provide the rock star glamour the public fell for.
Haven't you seen the current exit poll data? I'm going to be the next Mayor of Cairns.
Not on my watch, Stinky.
The stench of rotting zombies stiffened her resolve and she clenched her blade even tighter. Zombies running for office. That in itself still floored Jack. It was only in the last couple of weeks that zombies had gone from mindless, putrid killing machines to individuals, who had made multiple attempts on the lives of the populace, to being considered part of the community. It was all because of Sprout. Instead of his usual method of terrorizing the citizens, he had thrown his hat in the ring to run for Mayor and they had accepted him because he was a technically still a citizen, despite Magnus and her vehement input that he wasn't, and therefore allowed to run for election. It amazed Jack that people seemed to forget all about the attacks he had made on Cairns with his mindless followers. All people saw was a dramatic looking man who said what people wanted to hear. He promised no new taxes, more transport and less red tape. There was also the fact that if he could control the zombie masses then that was an added bonus. Jack knew he didn't give a crap about city infrastructure and services. Morcomb Sprout wanted to make the town his own little zombie kingdom. As for control of the zombies? He had no intention of doing that. Unfortunately, the voters were swayed by glamour. They thought he looked like a rock star. It was a stupid reason that would lead to death and destruction.
Morcomb Sprout smiled, turning his hands wide open to
