HISTORY
ALEXANDRIA (The birthplace of Umberto Eco)
His foundation dates back to 1168 from the union of municipalities (those beginning of the century. XII) Rovereto, Bergoglio, Marengo and Gamondio.
Was recognized by Emperor Frederick I Red Bear (Barbarossa) in 1183.
Hired for a short time the name of Cesaria and in 1198 was liberated by the emperor.
Assumed the name of Alexandria in honor of Pope Alexander III.
The motto of this city is Alexandria: humbles the powerful and lifts up the lowly.
FREDERICK I of Hohenstaufen, known as Red Bear (Barbarossa) - Emperor (1125 Selef - 1190
Asia Minor)
Son of Frederick II of Swabia and Judith.
The death of the Emperor Conrad III, his uncle, opened the way to the throne to Frederick I, which was elected king of Germany by the Diet in Frankfurt (March 4, 1152).
The policy of Frederick I aimed to restore the imperial authority in Germany and Italy, and
the limitation of papal power. (Omit the historical irrelevant to the story of Gagliaudo).
The municipalities did not give up their political autonomy and formed the Veronese League,
first, then the Lombard League (oath of Pontida, April 7, 1167).
He returned to Italy with a strong army, the Red bear (Barbarossa) conquered and occupied Ancona Rome, Pope Alexander III forced to take refuge in France.
During final descent in Italy, Frederick I tried in vain siege of Alexandria
(October 1174-aprile1175).
Defeated at Legnano by the League led by Alberto da Giussano, the emperor was
forced to sue for peace. Thus reached an agreement with the Pope Alexander III
recognizing it as the sole legitimate head of the church, signed a truce with the municipalities
and returned to the pope all the territories of the Church.
ALEXANDER III, pope (Siena beginning sec. XII-Civita Castellana 1181).
The century Rolando Bandinelli, of humble origins, became famous as a teacher of science
law in Bologna and was created cardinal by Adrian IV (1150), who wanted him as
adviser in the thorny issues with the empire. At the Diet of Besancon (1157) explained
his doctrine on the relationship between the Church and the papacy and drew the ire of Frederick Barbarossa and proponents of the empire.
Elected pope in 1159 by a majority of the cardinals, clashed immediately with the followers of
Red bear (Barbarossa), who countered two antipope. (I omit other historical irrelevant
in this story).
The municipalities of the Lombard League recognized him as their leader in 1168.
In 1176 the Lombard League defeated the emperor at Legnano.
LOMBARD LEAGUE
Name two against Imperial alliances formed between the various municipalities in northern Italy.
The first was formed against Frederick Red bear (Barbarossa) in the Diet of Roncaglia (1158)
Rearranging the administration in Italy had restored all the traditional imperial rights
at the expense of democratic government.
Thus, in the monastery of Pontida, near Bergamo, April 7, 1167 took the oath
the municipalities of Bergamo, Brescia, Mantua, Cremona, Milan, who in December
joined Venice, Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Treviso, Ferrara, Lodi, Piacenza, Parma,
Modena, Bologna. Pavia and Como were, on the contrary, loyal to the emperor.
The League obtained the protection of Pope Alexander III, who was dedicated to the city of
Alexandria, founded in 1168 by members.
Red bear (Barbarossa), in 1174, descended into Italy for the fifth time, besieged the new city
May 29, 1176, due to the lack of reinforcements from Germany, the troops of the League in
Battle of Legnano, cut away the emperor preventing it merges with the reinforcements sent from Pavia and the Marquis of Monferrato. The victory of the League, not so significant from the military point of view had a considerable political and moral, inflicting a blow to the prestige that had resonance in Germany.
ORDER OF HUMILIATED
Founded in Milan in 1135 by S. Bernardo has spread in northern and Southern France.
Formed by monks and nuns, priests and families from Humiliated devoted to processing
wool, cotton, silk and hemp.
All members are required to learn to read and write and do arithmetic.
Women are equal to men in duties before the sacraments and, therefore, enjoy egalitarian rights against the opposite sex. Women receive the same wages as men.
A community of Humble is forced to flee from Milan because of persecution and death threats by merchants Milan.
They take refuge in Rovereto and participate in the foundation of the future city of Alexandria,
called the straw because the houses and huts were hastily built and covered temporarily with straw.
The Telamone of Gagliaudo
A local tradition has seen in centuries-old carved figure holding a shape truncated cone the depiction of Gagliaudo Aulari, the hero of the siege imposed in 1175 by Frederick Red Bear (Barbarossa) to the new city, the personification of cunning and tenacity with which the Alexandrians defeated the imperial designs and conquered autonomy.
In fact, rather than the person depicted in the statue, according to local legend, very corroded to the secular exposure to the weather, is probably a Atlas burdened by the weight of the earth - in a non-spherical representation of course - telamone a classical memory. Although this sculpture, the result of a stonemason Lombard end of the twelfth century, belonged to the ancient cathedral. Was transferred on the North-Western corner of the facade of the new cathedral in 1815, as noted affix the inscription made for the occasion, from the cathedral.
