INTRODUCTION
Many of us have experienced being overwhelmed at one point or another. Our days fill up, almost without being aware of it. And suddenly we discover we have more to do than we can manage. The feelings of exhaustion creep in as we continue day after day without respite. Self care and leisure have gone right out the window. Over the course of time our physical, mental and even spiritual health can suffer.
What can you do to reverse the downward spiral? This book will help you walk through the condition of being overwhelmed and burned out. Using practices found in addiction recovery and healing yoga you will discover ways of looking at your life to help identify, diagnose, heal and choose your way to balance.
You will know when to ask yourself certain questions such as: How did this happen? How did life fill up like this? What is burnout? How can I tell? What is resilience? How does resilience impact burnout? How do I find balance? Is there a way to maintain it? What happens when activities and obligations exceed my capacity to rebound? How can I change from feeling overwhelmed to finding equilibrium?
Living life on overwhelm is not enjoyable. It can become filled with negative stress, illness and depression. One's ability to negotiate change can become impaired. With an already replete agenda even the most minor curveball can shatter a fragile sense of wellbeing. When my days are filled wall to wall with things to do, with duties to accomplish and people to see, a flat tire, a lost key, an unexpectedly lengthy phone call can topple my balance and impair my goodwill.
I record my daily activities on my calendar. Some are recurrent requirements or obligations, and some appointments are of an occasional nature. Still other things pop- up that weren't previously scheduled but need to be dealt with. I can schedule classes and I can find a routine for running family errands such as shopping. There are other events that require special planning and perhaps rearrangement or canceling of conventional engagements. There might be a vacation, a family get together, a party or a wedding - some celebration that gets added to the mix. All of these, the regular and the planned, can fill one’s time quite nicely. One’s life can be replete with them.
It is when I need to address something unexpected: a rescheduled date, an unplanned appointment, even a change in a traffic pattern that causes all trips to be slightly delayed can set me off my stride. When I am fatigued at the same time I have a few of these pop-ups
in a row, my resilience grows thin. If I am not well in any way, sleep impaired, feeling ill, lonely or depressed, if I am not eating well or if I am longing for companionship, any change to my routine can feel overwhelming.
