Stories of the Deugar - Clive Kristen
1988.
Introduction
The black Simonside Ridge dominates the skyline above Rothbury. This is serious walking country but the rambler should beware. It has been said that you could survive the snakes and the sucking mud of the peat-bogs only to encounter a mischievous and deadly creature called The Deugar, who lives in secret caves and takes great pleasure from luring unsuspecting walkers to their doom.
The curious history begins in the 13th century when a wandering monk encountered bear like creatures around Simonside. They probably were bears. There were enough of them around at the time. There are huge hairy creatures in many of the hilly places in the world. They are rarely seen by man and are given various names - such as Yeti, Bigfoot and Sasquatch.
The Deugar, who lives in the Simonside Hills in Northumberland, is the biggest and hairiest of all.
By the 15th century The Deugar was already enshrined in local folklore. We have hunting parties trying to flush out ‘ larger than human’ ape like creatures from the hills around the Coquet Valley and we have the first tales of The Deugar slow roasting human flesh. Perhaps the most remarkable part of The Deugar legend is its resilience.
It is not long ago that a Rothbury lady, riding her horse on the hill, came within a few feet of a creature that she had no doubt was The Deugar. She did not stay to be introduced.

He had followed the lamb for hours. Whenever he managed to get close, it would scamper away - closer and closer to the dark Simonside ridges.
David could still
