About this ebook

After being jilted by his fiancée and a night out with the boys, Justus O’Keefe and Samantha Cardinal end up sharing a night of passion that changes the course of their friendship, wedging them apart. Justus was relieved when his former fiancée called off the wedding since it saved him from doing it. He’s in love with his best friend Samantha, and can’t deny the night with her in his bed was the best night of his life.

The night Samantha gave into Justus’s charms is her ‘ultimate worst mistake’. She needs to put it behind them, only it’s a little late now. She’s having his baby. Can Justus win Samantha and make them a family? Can he convince her that deep in her heart she knows, they’ve always been more than just friends?

    Chapter 1

Didn’t it occur to you that maybe I don’t want to be around anyone?

Samantha Cardinal rolled her eyes and dismounted off her horse. Fastening the reigns to the tree where the other horse was tethered, she walked over to where the cranky one sat. Justus O’Keefe, I’m not just anyone. She plunked on the ground next to him. He turned and stared through dark lashes at her, his blue eyes held a small spark of amusement.

No, I guess you’re not. Justus glanced away and pulled at the grass. Trust you to find me. He tossed the grass in his hand and glanced back. You’re my best friend, Sam.

Obviously, I wore a pink taffeta dress just for you—an extremely ugly one may I add.

Justus’ brows shot up and he shook his head. Those were nasty bridesmaid dresses. What was Allison thinking?

Sam’s heart tightened. He was putting on a strong face. What was she thinking, leaving you at the altar with nothing but a note? Her eyes pricked with the threat of tears.

Staring out to the lake, he shook his head. No clue, I can’t help, but think it was for the best. Allison and I are different, I thought about that last night.

Sam wasn’t sure how to gauge Justus’s reaction. Instead, she just sat and listened, she was good at that. For two people who had been friends their whole lives, they had listening down to a science.

He shook his head. I realized last night; my whole life was going to be completely different.

Why doesn’t he sound sad? Shouldn’t he be sad?

Still unsure what was running through her best friend’s head she decided to ask the safe questions first. Different how?

Justus smiled and his blue eyes danced. I wouldn’t be able to sit here and tell you how incredibly ridiculous you looked in that pastel pink mess of a dress. His laughter tickled her ears down to her heart. She shoved him lightly with her shoulder.

You’re a wicked creature. That was friendship. She had practiced the pep talk on the ride to find him, only now words failed her. Sam glanced to the lake where they had spent their summers growing up, swimming and doing things that kids do.

Part of her wished that they were young and carefree again and her best friend hadn’t been left at the altar by a woman who would never appreciate him. She didn’t like Allison, though there were several reasons why, the big reason—well she wasn’t sure, but there were definitely many little ones.

Sure, those reasons were currently sitting with the guilt in the bottom of her soul with relief that Justus wasn’t getting married, but there would be more time to get into those emotions later. Right now she had to get him back to his parent’s, having promised Maureen, his mother, she would.

    You’re quiet.

Sam decided to take up Justus’s hobby of pulling at the spring grass between her cowboy boots. I’m waiting for you to spill your heart out and figured I would just sit here and listen.

There’s nothing to pour my heart out over.

Liar! You were left at the altar, pour that heart baby.

    Her brows furrowed.

What the hell is he thinking now? Why is he looking at me like that?

She studied him as a breeze came up and blew the end of her hair into her face. He reached out and brushed it off her cheek. Her skin tingled.

We’re just friends, best friends. A small voice reminded from the depths of her mind.

    He frowned slightly.

    Did my mother send you?

    Busted!

Sort of, but you must’ve known I’d come looking for you.

Yeah, his eyes scanned her face but his expression was unreadable.

She would give up her horse and her summers off work to know what he was thinking.

He lifted a skeptical brow. Do I dare ask what she’s doing?

Tossing her head from side to side, Sam finally cracked into a grin. "Sitting, talking to my mother about how all the food is going to go to waste and that
