Workout Programs Which one is right for me?

Sustainability for humans by definition is the potential for long-term maintenance of wellbeing. Our wellbeing is the synergy of all facets of our existence working in harmony to live our fullest potential as human beings. In other words, a life with inadequate amounts of exercise, rest, proper nutrition and spiritual enrichment isn’t a happy one.

The $64,000 dollar question isn’t which program is best for us, but rather which programs we can continue to follow for the rest of our lives maintaining the healthy weight and lifestyle we want for ourselves. Clinical studies have shown that getting the initial motivation to start and complete a short-term weight management plan is relatively easy, it’s the follow through and upkeep that brings people to their knees giving up and regaining their weight. So possibly a more appropriate approach would be to start thinking differently and train our minds from the outset that a sustainable lifestyle program is the only real answer.

Our modern lifestyle has become our own demise, if you question this look at the ever-increasing numbers of diseases in our population globally. Fortunately, for us our very bodies are our salvation as well. Evolution has equipped us with this remarkable tissue we call skeletal muscle. Scientific studies have proven the incredible effect that having healthy lean muscle mass has on us, from weight management to reducing depression. I will suggest that before you start an exercise program get a check up and make sure there aren’t any medical hindrances to getting going on your new life journey.

Do I need to join a gym? That will depend on your lifestyle fitness goals, the more rigorous they are the more specialized equipment and professional training may be needed. Fortunately, for the bulk of us with modest lifestyle fitness requirements and moderate incomes we can manage just fine at home with a few basic pieces of equipment.

Do I need a personal trainer? With the modern digital age, the average person is capable of maintaining a superb level of fitness in the privacy and comfort of their own home. If you have a need for a fairly advanced level of conditioning or for sport specific conditioning then hiring a personal trainer makes sense. Trainers have two roles as I see it, they ensure the safest and most efficient program to get the desired results and they are excellent at providing motivation and accountability to us in our time of need. Our bodies and earth’s gravity have been effective for building healthy bodies for eons. As a point, when is the last time any of us can say we saw gym equipment in Mother Nature. Exactly my point, lions and tigers don’t need a pec-dec machine to get into shape neither do we.

How complicated will this be and how much of my precious time will this take? This maybe the best and most often asked question of myself from hundreds of clients. The answer is simply something that is sustainable and fits your lifestyle fitness requirements. As an example, for the last 12 years I have lifted 30-45 minutes per workout three days a week. I walk 2-3 miles for 5-6 days per week averaging 15-minute miles. This allows me to maintain a healthy bodyweight and keep up my favorite lifestyle activities like backpacking and abalone diving not exactly armchair sports. That’s a grand total of just 6 hours a week out of 168 hours that I have
