Frieda Hamel loves men. But when it comes to having relationships with them, something always goes wrong. Told in two parts, Freida’s story begins in 1981. Starting college at the University of Minnesota, Frieda sheds her past as an unpopular, ugly-duckling high schooler. During her freshman year, Frieda must choose between two very different lovers even as her grades suffer. The most important and lasting relationship Frieda has turns out to be with Helen, whose courage and acerbic wit inspires her. “Boyfriends come and go but real girlfriends last forever,” Helen says, a sentiment that becomes tested by tragedy. In the second part, the thirty-plus Frieda is living in Minneapolis, enjoying greater success as an office worker than she has in the dating scene. A promotion at her company is offset by a frustrating affair with a married man followed by a fling with a guy whose jealous girlfriend goes on the attack. Struggling to overcome her own mistanthropy to help a friend, Frieda meets an exciting younger man while she isn’t looking for romance. Although the tall and handsome Julian holds Frieda’s interest, what makes them compatible could be some of their worst habits. When a coworker is accused of misconduct, Frieda’s decision to help him puts her professional reputation and personal safety at risk. Not your typical chick-lit heroine, Frieda describes her triumphs, failures, and traumas with dry wit and an unsentimental self-awareness.

“An actor is a narcissist but a director is a megalomaniac,” is Hugh Phillips’s reaction to his son’s desire to direct plays rather than go into the family legal business. But Julian will not be deterred; after four years of college, the young graduate affects an air of arrogance and ambition. But under this mask is an insecure, romantic boy whose charm and good looks lead to destructive affairs with women and men. There is the adoring and naïve housemaid; an unhinged “theater groupie”; an ingenuous Southern belle; and an older woman whose involvement with Julian threatens to become an unbearable scandal. When Julian has gone too far, who will stand beside him?

Like anyone, Frieda Hamel wants to make a good impression at her high school reunion. It’s been twenty years since graduation and she has arrived with a rich and handsome husband at her side. But one of her classmates has a secret that will leave Frieda’s family shaken to the core. Meanwhile her husband, Julian Phillips, has his hands full as he directs a movie on location starring one of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood. As Frieda struggles to redefine her family, Julian has to deal with sexual escapades among cast and crew, a scandal-seeking reporter roaming the sets, and one actor who carries an old grudge against him. Frieda is anxious to keep her personal problems from colliding with Julian’s professional challenges but marriage is supposed to be about sharing, for better or for worse.

I was born fifty-seven years ago in the Bible belt but grew up in a Massachusetts college town. I am married and my wife and I have moved frequently since we met. We've lived in Minnesota, Massachusetts, and New Mexico, as well as a brief residency in Berlin, Germany. I have worked peripherally in health care, banking, and insurance. In addition to writing, I have done a bit of amateur acting and comedy performances. I am afraid of heights but public speaking doesn't scare me. My wife and I live in Albuquerque with our chihuahua.
