    About the Author

    Introduction

This book of 25 Stockings is designed to be used every year and become part of a family tradition in the build up to Christmas Day.  Advent means Coming and in December we count down the time until we celebrate the coming of Christ.   Using this book with the 25 Stockings will help people of all ages to enjoy and discover more about counting down to Christmas and journeying in the Christian faith.

    25 Stockings

Included at the back of this book are two different sets of instructions to make 25 Stockings to hang somewhere in your home as a decoration through the month of December. You can use one of these designs or come up with your own creative 25 stockings to journey to Christmas.

Every December fill each of the 25 stockings with enough sweets, stickers or other small treats for everyone in the household.   Each day, share out the treats and use the devotional material to think about the celebration of the coming of Christ.

Taking Time to Journey to Christmas

There are nine different Times from which you can mix and match each day.  Each day is based around the Bible Time passage.  Read the passage and then select something else from that day depending on your available time and resources.  It’s unlikely that you’ll have time to do everything each day, but it means each Advent brings something fresh and new as you use the book over the years.

    Bible Time

Bible Time includes the whole Christmas story from the books of Matthew and Luke, broken up and spread throughout the 25 days. The version of the Bible used is the Contemporary English Version. These verses form the basis each day for the rest of the Time slots.

    Question Time

Question Time is something little children particularly enjoy.  They listen to the Bible Time carefully because at the end there will be three questions they have to answer based on what was read aloud.

    Reflection Time

Reflection Time includes reflections and thoughts from the author based on the Bible passage and what it might mean for us in our daily lives today.

    Discussion Time

Discussion Time, unlike the Question Time does not necessarily have questions with easy answers. The open ended questions might be about faith, or about our traditions and the way we approach our life choices.  These are short questions with big possibilities.

    Activity Time

Activity Time is all about doing rather than talking. The activities range from making things at home to going outside exploring.  Usually the activities are related to the Reflection Time but you are able to approach it in a more hands-on way.

    Decoration Time

Decoration Time means each day there a new decoration can be made for your Christmas tree.  As well as being a craft activity, like the Activity Time it is a hands-on way of picking up some of the themes in the Bible Time.  The Decoration Time could also stand alone as the only time completed each day.  Another idea is to set up an empty tree next to your stockings and fill it with the decorations that you make each day.  A list of craft requirements to make all the decorations is included at the end of this book.   You might like to start a box containing the required craft bits and add to it each year.

    Study Time

Do you want to find out more about some of these things?  Each day there are two study questions that could springboard to further learning and understanding about the history and background.  There are on-line Bible study resources that can help, or you could visit your local church or Christian bookshop to find study aids. This is more suitable for adults and teens.

    Response Time

Response Time is a hands-on prayer.  There is a suggested physical activity and the idea is that you say a one sentence prayer as a response to God after reading the Bible Time verses.

    Prayer Time

Prayer Time is a prayer that can be read aloud as a response to the Bible Time. Alternatively, you could make up your own prayer to end your 25 Stocking Adventure each day.
