Introduction
Angels are beings of light. The word angel comes from the Greek word angelos , which means messenger.
This is because the main task of angels is to carry messages to and from God. Angels also provide help and comfort whenever necessary.
As angels are believed to have been created on the second day of Creation, it’s not surprising that angels predate history. Many primitive religions believed in beings that were able to cross from the physical world to the kingdom of the gods. Zoroastrianism, the religion founded by the Persian prophet Zoroaster (sixth century bce) contained a form of angel known as amesha spentas, the holy immortals.
The angels of Judaism came originally from the cosmology created by Zoroaster and, later on, Christian angels were based on the Hebrew tradition. Still later, the Christian and Jewish angels had an influence in the angelology of Islam.
Angels are mentioned on numerous occasions in the religious books of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In fact, many of the most important occurrences in all of these faiths took place with the help of angels. These religions have differing views on the nature and duties of angels, but they all implicitly accept the reality of them.
However, throughout history there have also been people who have refused to accept the possibility of angels. One person who thought a great deal about the subject was Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913), the Welsh naturalist, who devised a theory of evolution by natural selection that was published at the same time as that of Charles Darwin. He wrote: If, as I contend, we are forced to the assumption of an infinite God . . . it seems only logical to assume that the vast, the infinite chasm between ourselves and the Deity is to some extent occupied by an almost infinite series of grades of beings, each successive grade having higher and higher powers in regard to the origination, the development, and the control of the universe.
¹
This is a logical argument, as every organization of any size has a hierarchical structure. It’s not too far-fetched to believe a similar structure—a hierarchy of angels—is maintaining the entire universe.
Only a few years ago, people were embarrassed to talk about angels. In 1943, when Dr. Mortimer Adler wanted to include an article on angels in a proposed book on the great ideas of Western civilization, he received strong opposition from his editorial committee.² Fortunately, he persisted, and the article was included. In 1975, when Billy Graham’s book Angels: God’s Secret Agents appeared, it was one of the few books available on the subject. Today there are hundreds, reflecting people’s renewed interest in this ancient topic.
It is also possible that angels have started taking a more active interest in mankind, too. I hope this is the case, as we need them more than ever in the world we live in today.
There is no doubt that you can communicate with angels. The more open you are to the possibility of angelic contact, the more likely you will be to experience the joy and exhilaration of these remarkable manifestations. You need to be alert, open, and ready to experience angelic contact.
The best way to approach this book is to read it through first, deciding on the topics that interest you most. Work with these first, and after you have achieved some success with them, move on to explore some of the other chapters. Everyone is different, and subjects that fascinate you will not necessarily appeal to someone else. Start by performing the rituals in the way I have described them, but then use your intuition to change anything you feel necessary to make the rituals entirely your own. By doing so, you will develop in your own way and may make discoveries that help other people establish their own personal connections with the angels.
Over the years, I have seen the astonishing results people have achieved by communicating with angels through ritual and prayer, and I hope this book will help you, too, to establish a relationship with God through His angels.

Prayer
The word prayer comes from two Latin words: precarious , which means obtained by begging,
and precari , which means to beseech or implore.
Consequently, prayer has always been used to ask for something for yourself or for others.
Although few people discuss prayer in everyday conversation, praying is an extremely common practice. A Gallup poll revealed that ninety percent of the United States population prays, and sixty percent of these people considered prayer to be an extremely important part of their lives.³
Prayer is a spiritual communication with God, the architect of the universe, whoever or however you conceive of God. Prayer is a deliberate act that enables you to experience the sacred and communicate with the universal life force. Clement of Alexandria (c. 150–c. 215), a theologian and early Christian father, said: Prayer is conversation with God.
Prayer affirms your connection with the divine.
Anyone can communicate with God through prayer. It makes no difference who you are. You can belong to any religion, or none. Prayer is not reserved for any specific faith or religion. It makes no difference if you are rich or poor, good or bad, black or white. Different people express themselves in varying ways, but it makes no difference how you phrase your prayers.
Language skills are irrelevant. Jesus taught: Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him
(Matthew 6:8). A delightful Hasidic tale tells of a man who wanted to pray, but had left his prayer book at home. He decided to recite the alphabet five times, and allow God to rearrange the letters to form the required prayer. God replied, Of all the prayers I have heard today, this one was the best because it came from a simple and sincere heart.
⁴
A silent prayer in which the person communes with the divine can be as effective as any other form of prayer. Consequently, everyone has the ability to communicate, and establish a relationship, with the divine. Saint Teresa of Ávila, the sixteenth-century Spanish mystic, expressed how sublime this form of communication was when she described it as an intimate friendship, a frequent conversation held alone with the Beloved.
⁵
The desire to communicate with a higher power is universal. Thousands of years ago, the psalmist described this need using the analogy of a deer longing for water. As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God
(Psalm 42:1–2). In other words, our souls are constantly striving to reach a spiritual level, and prayer is the most natural way to achieve this.
There are many different types of prayer. You can praise God. You can give thanks to God. You can request healing for yourself and for others. You can pray for peace in the world. You can ask for mercy and forgiveness.
You can also ask God for anything you desire. In fact, asking God for whatever it is you want is what many people consider a prayer to be. Jesus said: What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them
(Mark 11:24). Obviously, the hardest part of a prayer of this sort is to believe that it’s possible. God doesn’t have what you desire, but is the substance of that desire. Consequently, if you have enough faith, and ask for it seriously and sincerely, you can ask God for anything.
There should be no conditions attached to your prayers. If you pray to God asking for ten million dollars, and promise that if you win it you’ll give half of it to charity, you are negotiating, not praying.
You must be completely honest. If you pray and tell God how happy you are that your best friend won the promotion you were after, you may be stretching the truth. You are more likely to feel annoyed and angry because you thought you were the better candidate. If this is the case, you should tell God how angry you are, and how much you had wanted the promotion. Once you have done that, you can ask for forgiveness and then move on to other matters.
There is no need to repeat your request over and over again in the same prayer. This indicates a lack of faith and a lack of trust in the power of prayer. Jesus said: But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him
(Matthew 6:7–8).
Jesus also recommended that you pray in secret: But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly
(Matthew 6:6). This means that you should find a quiet spot in which to pray, and the results will manifest where you can see them.
Jesus added a vital element that is often overlooked: And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses
(Mark 11:25–26).
Jesus’s final suggestion was that you finish your prayers by reciting the Lord’s Prayer: After this manner therefore pray ye: ‘Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen’
(Matthew 6:9–13).
I have met many people who can recite the Lord’s Prayer but have never given a thought to what it means. The message is straightforward and direct. Our Father in heaven
means that you are addressing God directly. Hallowed be thy name
shows that God’s name is sacred. Thy kingdom come
shows the kingdom of heaven is waiting for all of us. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
This shows that God’s divine will look after everything in His time. Give us this day our daily bread
simply means that you are asking for bread today. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors
shows that you are
