    Lady Linguist

    When she heard the rattling Aphrodite thought nothing of it, attributing it subconsciously in her shallow sleep to one of several possible sources: early garbage collectors down in the street, a truck making a delivery, the cat's food pan on the balcony shuddering in the winter wind. She lived in a crowded neighborhood of Thessaloniki and had grown used to the constant noise.

    But when she heard the scream she was instantly awake. Her eyes popped wide open but she didn't get up. Instead she wrapped the quilt around herself more tightly and listened. The scream was repeated, more shrill this time. Aphrodite thought that it came from the apartment above. She heard banging, footfalls, a door slam.
