Synopsis: A woman’s twin sister becomes widowed so she arranges for her to go to Kansas with her, where she’s to be married to a mail ordered husband. Unknowingly, they are roped into playing a game they’ve had long practice at when the one engaged woman’s fiancé switches with his twin brother because the ‘real’ one had to stay on their ranch and build a new house for he and his soon to be bride.
Flora washed the same plate for the third time as she stood at the sink trying to avoid the people crowding her small house. If one more person tried to explain to her how God never gave us more than we could bear, she wouldn’t be able to hold herself back from punching them right in the mouth. She couldn’t bear any of this.
The loss of her husband within the first year of their wonderful marriage was too much to ask of her. It was too much to ask of any woman, she thought. They were still getting to know and understand each other. She’d just gotten used to the feel of waking up next to someone she loved. She was finally comfortable making his coffee the way he liked it and cooking his favorite foods. She’d spent the past nine months learning everything she could about this man and now, in the blink of an eye, he was gone.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
….
The line ran through her head in the boorish tone of the disinterested preacher. He’d simply shone up to do his duty and collect his fee. He didn’t know her husband and he had no stake in whatever would come next. It was just another funeral in a town that had seen far too many deaths lately.
A sudden flurry of activity at the front door forced her attention back to the matters at hand. She turned to find a familiar figure trying to push her way into the crowded room. A few startled gasps rose from the people as they caught sight of the woman’s face. She ignored their reactions and searched the room for the one person she needed to find.
Flora dropped the dish she was holding and ran into her twin sister Fauna’s waiting arms with a sob. There wasn’t another person in the world she wanted to see in this moment more than her twin. Well, except for her husband and he was no longer in this world.
Fauna quickly took charge of the house and encouraged the mourners to finish their cake and go home. She went about collecting plates and cups and saying polite words to the effect of ‘Thank you for coming’, ‘So nice to see you again’, and ‘Good-bye’ as she herded people towards the door.
Flora would have laughed at the looks on their faces at her sister’s behavior, but she was worn out with trying to be polite. She was happy to see everyone leave. There’d been people in the house since early this morning trying to comfort the widow, or so they said.
Just when she thought that everyone was gone, there was a quiet ‘ahem’ from the corner of the living room. She turned to find the town banker sitting there waiting to have a word with her. He looked particularly unpleasant today, she thought. He didn’t have a reputation for being very nice anyway.
With a sigh, she went over, sat down in a chair opposite him, and waited for him to speak.
Mrs. Wellington, I’m here on behalf of the bank to express our condolences for the loss of your husband. As you may or may not have been aware, this property was solely in the name of your husband. In the state of South Carolina, there is no provision for women to hold ownership of property. In consideration of your circumstances, the bank is willing to give you a full thirty days to vacate the property.
He paused to consider the look on her face.
Flora was stunned into silence. Everything they’d had was tied up in this property. If she understood what he was saying, the bank expected her to get up and walk away with nothing just because her husband died. What an odd punishment for living, she thought.
That was the last thought Flora remembered before her brain simply stopped taking in any more information. She was able to see the man’s mouth moving, but there was no sound. It was almost as if she was in a glass box or under water. She watched her sister Fauna grab the man by the back of his shirt collar and half drag/half push him out the front door. She saw Fauna coming towards her with a look of concern on her face and then she saw nothing. Everything went black.
Flora listened to the sound of the birds chirping
