      Misery and Loneliness

      Alice was miserable .

      The humid heat in the tropics had made her frizz. Walking through this stupid underground tunnel and slipping on the muddy cave floor had covered her jeans in mud. So what if this was the Tunnel of Endless Love? She wasn’t feeling any love right now.

      She hadn’t had any breakfast, she was on her period, and she was ready for murder.

      Her best friend Gabriella touched her arm. Hey, girl. Are you ok? Gabriella had a little wrinkle between her brows.

      Alice counted to five. There was no reason to vent all of her misery at Gabriella. There would be no chalk outline around her best friend. She blew out a breath. Yeah, I’m ok. It’s just that I’m PMSing, hungry, and coated in mud. And my hair’s an absolute mess. Those things combined together added up to a terrible day.

      Do you want a granola bar? Gabriella gestured towards her purse.

      Thanks! I forgot that you carry those everywhere. I’ll pay you back with a batido. Batidos, Ecuadorian smoothies, were the currency of choice for their group; they served as repayment for both money and favors. Alice felt better already, and she still hadn’t eaten anything.
