About this ebook
This story tells about the dangers that young pilots face in their training to become professional pilots flying off carriers in pursuit of our strategy for national defense.
”Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.” Navy Wings describes the fear and the courage that Naval Aviators face in their training to become Attack Pilots.
Navy Wings is a fictional account of my autobiography in training to become a Navy Attack Pilot. This story describes the challenges I faced in preparation for flight school while attending NROTC training at Rice University. No training is complete without young love, first sex, and developing a life-time relationship with my current wife.
“Hours and hours of sheer boredom, interrupted by moments of stark terror.” You won't be able to put this story down and to complete the other stories in the series: “The Man in White,” and “WestPac”.

After my summer training was completed, I returned to Wichita Falls and started chasing Julie Wilson around again. We rekindled our relationship as she was preparing to leave for her first year of college in Columbia, Missouri--an all girls’ school named Christian College in the same city as the University of Missouri.
The Cold War was in full bloom. The military draft required young men to register and to be called for duty unless they were exempted due to being in college or some other good reason.
I went to the library and read up on the Cold War, how it started and its current status and the draft just to avoid any surprises.
Cold War Begins
Hiroshima
In 1945 Germany had surrendered to the Allies in World War II but the Japanese were staunchly holding on. The U. S. was preparing for a physical invasion of the mainland of Japan and predicting many casualties, both Japanese and American. President Harry Truman who had just taken over as President of the U.S. after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, had one more weapon to deploy that changed the course of history, the atomic bomb.
The atomic bomb has been used only twice in warfare. The first was at Hiroshima. A uranium bomb nicknamed Little Boy
(despite weighing in at over four and a half tons) was dropped on Hiroshima August 6, 1945. The Aioi Bridge was the target; set to explode at 1,980 feet above ground. The Aioi Bridge is an unusual T
-shaped three-way bridge and easy to spot from the air.
At 0815 hours, the bomb was dropped from the Enola Gay, a USAF B-29 bomber,
