About this ebook

There is an expression that goes like this: "An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward."

In Glass to Sand, this is a concept explored by the author, sometimes painfully, other times with a colorful delight. In the first section of five poems, Kimberly relays themes sprouting from a millennial age and yet universal, like first heartbreak, living a fast life and dealing with the pressures of a society with often-established norms of how a life should be really be lived. The author also makes us of confections as imagery for anything from regret to self-confidence and patience.

In the second half of the anthology, the short stories dive deeper into realistic millennial conversations complete with a bearded hipster meeting a self-help reader in a café. The conversations then shift to memories from the author's ancestors about an ill-fated evening waiting for a shiny Ford, and a nightmare stemming from the all-too-common issue of domestic violence. The collection's last eponymous story completes the transition from a reflection of a painful past into a promising contemplation of the future.

Kimberly Marcela

Kimberly Marcela is a screenwriter and filmmaker who is passionate about equal rights movements and Latin-American culture. Raised on both coasts, in Los Angeles and Miami, her dual upbringing exposed her to many different art forms, cultures, and lifestyles. Dance, theater, and film all piqued her interest, but brewing under the surface was her first love — writing.Armed with her passion and a desire for higher education, Kimberly graduated the Creative Writing for Entertainment Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Full Sail University, and later went on to the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. Since her time in high school and beyond, Kimberly has been published through a variety of platforms, such as content for Full Sail University's online literary magazine, The Aviator and on-air radio talent JoJo Wright, as well as health and lifestyle articles for LAUSD, and an anthology book, to name a few. With a growing appetite for the film and television industry, Kimberly wrote and produced multiple short films, music videos, and creative content for millennials and generation Z. She also completed an internship at Sony Television Networks and at Film Independent at the Los Angeles Film Fest. In both organizations, she had the chance to use her bilingual proficiency and bicultural understanding to reach a broader Latino audience. Her hard work, great attitude, and proven ability have always paved the way for new opportunities, like establishing a monthly column for Film Independent, one of the most important organizations for filmmakers around the world.Kimberly is currently working as Head of Creative Development and Production for Rx Media Productions in Los Angeles, creating, directing, and producing original content that reflects her deeply held passions.

    About Kimberly

    MY BEST FRIEND

I had my heart broken once.

I did everything you shouldn’t do

I did everything you usually do.

    Re-read our text messages

Kept his V-neck so I could

    Inhale his cologne, strong, cool

    Retraced his face

With my fingers in the dark

The scruff, the eyelashes, the warmth.

Heard his voice, sinking deep, baritone.

Drew the outline of his kisses

Where he’d left them on me.

I ate a lot of ice cream.

Watched a lot of Ryan Gosling.

    Everyone told me to stop

    Get over him already

    He didn’t deserve you

    They made me laugh

    They took me dancing

But they didn’t help me forget him.

Only my best friend could do that.

    His consistency

When I froze, he kept going but

Making sure he didn’t leave me behind.

    He sent new text messages

So I wouldn’t see the older ones

    Took the V-neck, faded,

    Washed until the cologne vanished.

In the dark, he showed me how

To retrace my own softness, eyelashes, warmth

    Made my voice rise like

    Foam in the ocean,
