About this ebook

Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga is for anyone interested in improving health and flexibility who does not have the time or money to visit a yoga studio or cannot sit on the floor and twist like a pretzel.

Anyone can practice yoga regardless of their physical condition, flexibility, or schedule. The book introduces the spiritual and physical benefits of yoga and how readers can learn to work with their own body type to perform postures safely and effectively. Sections include Chair Yoga, Bed Yoga, Travel Yoga, Office Yoga, and Anywhere Yoga. Each chapter features step-by-step instructions and clear, corresponding illustrations. In every picture, the moves are performed by regular yoga practitioners and not flexible and intimidating superstars.

For people with physical limitations or illnesses, the book focuses on stretching, pain prevention and reduction, relieving stress, and helping with symptoms of sickness. The postures work out every part of the body and feature exercises that can be done in comfortable positions with many simpler alternatives. With no acrobatics needed, these postures can be done anywhere the reader desires, be it standing in lines, in waiting rooms, even while watching TV.

For frequent travelers there are stretches to relieve commuter stress, keep flexible, and prevent blood clots, jet lag and anxiety.

This book is tailored for adults who would like to enjoy the benefits of yoga but can't devote their lives to it.

Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body YogaBy Emily SloninaAfter reading this practical guide to using yoga in everyday life, I am convinced that yoga should be taught in our schools at an early age. Why wait until we are older and more fearful of tiring this form of exercise. The author outlines the principles of yoga in a very clear method using words and pictures to show that everyone no matter what shape, size or age can reap so many benefits by exercising their muscles and learning to relax. This is a great guide to starting an exercising program at any stage of your life. Some poses have been modified to allow everyone to participate. Easy to follow and can be used at work, sitting at a computer, in nursing homes or any other place that just has a chair. If you want to read about a book that can help you with the every day stresses and staying limber, then please read this book.

If you've never practiced yoga because you believe it belongs to the realm of the skinny and flexible, then it's time to change your perspective. While yoga is practiced by skinny men and women who can contort themselves into the oddest of positions, yoga bests benefits the rest of the world...you know, us normal people."Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga" by Emily Slonina shows us all that yoga isn't restricted to those who are already fit, but can be practiced by the overweight, the elderly, and even the wheelchair-bound. Using models that represent every body type, except the ultra-thin, Slonina provides extensive pictures of various poses and their alternates that can be performed sitting or standing, on the floor or in the office chair, alone or even with a grandchild. The book is divided into different sections relaxation, meditation, of course, the poses. It does lack a deeper dive into some of the mental aspects of practicing yoga, but considering it's size and price, this book is hard to beat, especially when considering the target audience. If you've always wanted to try yoga and gain the benefits of regular practice, but have felt intimiated by stereotypes, then this is the book for you.

This book was an excellent example of a clearly written and well illustrated (photographed) guide for people of all abilities who would like to benefit from practicing yoga. The chapters were relevant and succinct with step-by- step instructions that could be followed without difficulty. I would recommend the book for all audiences but especially those with functional limitations or professions dealing with folks who have mobility issues. As a beginning yoga practitioner, I thought the book was a great resource..

It took me a while to actually read this book. I looked at the pictures and said to myself I don't look like that and I'm a lot more active. But once I started I found it to be just my level! I've never really gotten into yoga because the classes were beyond me. Emily shows me how to start where I am and not where I imagined (or wanted) myself to be. I especially love the poses I can do at work and on an airplane. I also like the cooling breath. It works! This is a great introduction to yoga.

Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga: A practical guide to using yoga in everyday life by Emily SloninaAnywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga is the perfect book for me, at my age, at my time of life. I'm almost 65 and really out of shape - not a condition I'm used to. I retire in 18 months in a travel trailer to see the lower 48.How can I do this as out of shape as I am? I have this great book!! I'm writing this review now but intent to write another one after completing some time doing the poses myself. The beginning of the book stuns me when it states, "The benefits of yoga include improving balance, decreasing stress, increasing flexibility, strengthening bones, stabilizing blood pressure, reducing pain and injuries, developing and toning muscles, and helping us age more gracefully" WOW - does that sound like a wonder drug or what? As I began reading and doing the poses myself, I realized she may be correct. This is an exception book with little reading material but lots of pictures showing how to do each step of every exercise. I made notes on most of the exercises and their benefits. I have practiced "traditional yoga" in past years and Slonina adapts each pose well. She gives variations for people who need to sit or need to lean on something for support. Since I spend most of my days now at a desk, I am extremely happy with this book because many of the exercises are to relieve tension in one's neck and/or shoulders. Worth their weight in gold!I liked the "Feet and Ankle Warm-Up" on page 24. Just keep your foot under your desk and exercise a way! No one will ever know. The benefits: "This warm-up strengthens yours legs, ankles and feet and promotes increased blood flow." So simple but a much needed exercise if you sit for hours at a time. I can't say enough about this book. Thanks to Emily.

A quick glance through this book confirms the sincerity of the "Any Body" yoga title. After reading a few pages, this long-time wannabee is actually doing it! Emily Slonina's approach is gentle, supportive, and pressure-free. She emphasizes safe postures, and encourages students to learn their own limits below the pain threshold. She shows and tells not only what to do, but why and how it works. Understanding this "engineering structure" helps me learn and remember the moves. These moves can be done in short sessions throughout the day -- while lying in bed, sitting in a wheelchair, in a car during a traffic jam, standing in line at the post office, while gardening, etc. This book (written in response to demand from Emily's students) is well organized, clearly written, and generously illustrated. It will remain a well-used part of my permanent library, and of my life!

This book has been great so far. What struck me the most, from the beginning, were the pictures: the quantity, the symbols attached, and most of all that the people were not young, fit and skinny. I think that's what I've always found intimidating about yoga, because I'm not young, fit or skinny either. I am going to work with this book to conquer yoga, once and for all. Highly recommend to fellow yoga beginners out there. Give it a try!

Emily has outdone herself with this book. It is informative, helpful, easy to understand. I have been fitting in the suggested poses into my schedule where I can and they have helped with flexibility where I need it. Often we forget that we do not have to do a full routine to receive the benefits of yoga, somewhere along the line I had forgotten that I do not have to work along with a 1/2 hour video to reap the benefits. This book is great for visual learners, as it has large easy to follow along with photos. Instructions are clear and short so as to be easy to understand. There is a "benefits" and "tip" section with each pose that I found helpful. I've recommended this book to my mother as she has a hard time exercising. This is definitely a 5-star that I will be keeping near by to use.

Very basic, very simple ... these are good things. I've perused many beginner yoga books, and the clear straightforward descriptions of positions and variations, including some whys, are better than the competition. Then, there's the pictures, everyday less than Raquel Welch perfect. I recommend for geezers like me, or even younger beginners.

I have lived with this book for the past week, exercising when possible. Conference calls are now more welcome because these exercises can be done at your desk. The stretching exercises are great for everyone. All poses have been modified for different abilities. I especially like the breathing exercises and Sa-Ta-Na-Ma exercise for relaxing. Even if you regularly take yoga classes, there are additional exercises in this book that I had not seen before, such as yoga for hands, fingers, and wrists. Who doesn't get hand cramps after being on the computer? There even yoga for your eyes. Great book. Handy exercises for all ages and abilities.

I've always heard that flexibility is the key to aging gracefully. Healthy, happy, active years are just a yoga pose away. And, although I freely admit I'm no longer in the "young" category, I'm not old either. I'm smack-dab in the middle of middle-age and my body is letting me know it. In fact, it's stiff and tired and sending me, at the very least, DEFCON 4 warnings. When my back started to regularly cinch up, I blamed my mattress. When my hips ached to the point the pain woke me in the middle of the night, I was positive I had just slept on them wrong. But, when my neck led an independent coup to stay rigidly perched up there on my shoulders like a stick, I had to admit, a body I thought would never let me down was done cooperating. That's why I requested and received the book [Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga] by Emily Slonina through LibraryThing's Early Reviewer Program. When scanning the book upon its arrival, the introduction showed the models used. Definitely not the typical pretzel-ed-bodied young men and women we are used to seeing in these types of instructional books. Don't let their looks fool you. These men and women were different sizes, shapes and had a variety of health issues and handicaps. My first thought? I'm not one of these people. Surely I'm in better shape than they are. I couldn't have been more wrong. I worked my way through each yoga pose, and did every variation and found that, yes indeed, I was one of these people. In fact, they were kicking my stiff behiney with their skills. They were awesome and I applaud each one for encouraging me just by their presence on the pages. The poses were very adaptable to a variety of different people and their limitations (while stressing comfort and safety) and I found all of them equally challenging no matter how they were altered for different health issues. As stated, many were easy to do in a small space without disturbing anyone around you. Instructions were clear and easy to follow with great visuals and covered benefits for every part of the body. Who knew there was yoga for the eyes? Two things I wish would have been done differently in the lay-out of the book. It would have been very helpful and convenient for me as a beginner to have this book be a stand-alone flip book with larger print. It was a bit frustrating trying to keep the book open to the appropriate page and follow just exactly how to properly do a pose to get the maximum benefit. I'm sure in time I will be an old, flexible pro at the poses, but until then, I'll have to stop what I'm doing to flip pages and squint at instructions. But, that is a minor inconvenience compared to the benefits I will gain from the stretching, strengthening and calming nature of yoga. I recommend this to anyone who isn't a Cirque du Soleil performer. Wait. I take that back. I recommend it even to them. A very practical guide for anyone needing a spiritual and physical boost.

I have never done yoga from a book before, but I have done some yoga before.I sprained my ankle right before winning this book, so perfect timing to test all the chair based exercises. Pros: I love the models, and the variety of models for each pose, the variety helps demonstrate the many modifications, which is very helpful. I was able to just flip through, look for anyone sitting in a chair, and practice those poses. The exercises are well explained and well illustrated. There are lots of chair based poses, and they are still all really good stretches. The emphasis on and variety of short stretches you can do anywhere is great - that's why I expect to keep the book. That one little stretch for carpal tunnel is going to be a regular habit.Cons:The only complaint I have with the content is that it would be really nice to have some example sequences to work through, and maybe some guesses as to how long each should take if you're doing it right. Many poses span multiple pages, which is hard to keep up with. For the ones that span more than two, I'm not sure there's anything that could be done and still have the level of illustration at each step that is so nice. But many are two pages, and it would be great if they were arranged so that I didn't have to flip to see the rest of it.It would be really helpful if the book was spiral bound or something so that the pages stayed open. That also made following along challenging. It would happily recommend this to anyone, regardless of their level of yoga knowledge, who wanted some small stretches to fit into their day, or some poses that have modifications for sitting.

A friendly, accessible introduction to yoga at a basic level. The author, Emily Slonina, has chosen a number of modified poses that could be easily incorporated into most people's daily lives. Reflecting this, the models demonstrating the poses are not the usual toned and flexible people seen in many yoga manuals. Slonina's models are young and old, male and female, slim and fat, fit and wheelchair-bound. It would be hard, upon flipping through the book, to argue that yoga "is not for me." Overall, I found her instructions clear and easy to follow, with helpful supporting illustrations. One thing that might be a useful addition would be some way of indicating when one moves on an inhale, and when one moves on an exhale. Another criticism I have of the book is that, although there are a couple of African-Americans on the cover, all of the models inside the book are white. It would also be nice if the book were spiral-bound, so that it could lay open while using it.Overall, I found this a helpful book that would be useful for introducing some simple ways to add yoga to your life, regardless of your physical abilities or body type.

When I saw the this book as part of Early Reviewers and saw that it was already available for purchase I couldn't wait and just bought it. It was worth it. The title doesn't lie, this book makes yoga accessible to anyone. This book would be most useful for people attempting yoga for the first time without a teacher and for people who are constrained either by time, mobility or space (space is my big issue). The one thing this book lacked was a section of routines that could be used for different issues (for instance, a chair/wheelchair routine, a computer worker routine, a airplane seat routine, etc) - while I can compile that on my own it would have been nice to have that already provided. Things that I really liked about the book, relaxation/breathing exercises were provided besides the postures and the fact that the models were real people in real situations. Nothing was intimidating and lots of practical advice - great book

This book is titled as A Practical Guide to using Yoga in everyday life. After reading through it, I would have to agree. The author is said (on the back cover) to be a Certified hatha yoga instructor and a laughter yoga leader (what ever those are) but in this book, she takes most of the mystery out of yoga. Not only is there straight forward, easy to read and follow instructions on each position / pose, there are some great pictures of real people that help to encourage the use of variations of each pose depending on your sense of balance, strength, flexibility or even whether you can stand or not. Each and every position / pose in yoga is geared to a goal, that is another mystery of yoga that this book addresses. With the help of Emily Slonina, it is easy to determine which of the poses will be most beneficial, whether it be for aches and pains or tension relief. In this book, the guess work has been taken out of it, each and every pose has a benefit and most have a brief comprehensible description of how and why it helps. Some of the variations shown are sometimes a classical yoga pose for the more advanced or agile body. Some show a more typical office worker and how they might incorporate yoga as a way of managing at the office. There are poses that include house work, leisure play and even some of the variations include the addition of another person. There are tips in on when and where some of these poses might benefit a person the most. All of these are written in a way that is easy to follow and easy to accomplish Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body - it really does live up to it’s name.

Emily Slonina's `Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga' provides an easy entrée for non-traditional students to the physical and mental benefits of Yoga. Slonina's book provides simple-to-follow illustrated instructions for basic Yoga poses. Each pose is shown in its conventional Hatha Yoga form and is also modified for those who are physically challenged. The benefits of each pose are also explained. And providing further inspiration, the models are real people of various ages and physical abilities. It is sometimes daunting for the non-traditional athlete to venture to the gym or Yoga studio for the first time. This is a great first step for such students - by following Slonina's easy-to-understand directions, the student can both learn to adapt Yoga poses to their own needs and also experience the benefits of a Yoga program. `Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga' opens the door to the practice of Yoga for many who can truly benefit, but who may be unable to find a suitable program or be reticent about its public practice. And once that door is opened, who knows how far they can venture? Five stars: `Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga' should be of interest to older and physically challenged students who want a simple easy-to-follow introduction to Hatha Yoga and to anyone who practices Yoga but who must modify her program to accommodate physical problems.

Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga - Emily Slonina

Introduction

021

Traditionally, yoga has been considered a path toward deeper meaning — a union of mind, body, and spirit. Two questions you might ask yourself: How can I begin to use this five-thousandyear-old discipline? And why do I want to? This book will teach you simple yoga principles that you can incorporate into your daily life — while sitting in a chair, lying on a bed, working at the office, traveling, standing in the shower, doing housework. These exercises can be used just about anywhere, anytime, by anybody. And as for the why — simply put, because they make you feel good!

When you hear the word yoga, what do you picture in your mind? Do you see a lean, muscular man sitting with his legs crossed and his hands resting on his knees? Or do you perhaps see an incredibly flexible woman contorted into a strange position? Both of these images can be correct. Many of us, however, may not have even seen or touched our toes since we were teenagers. Some of us are not able to transition easily from standing to sitting on the floor. Just the thought of standing on our heads may make others of us feel dizzy. Also, in today’s society, many of us have very busy schedules and are unable to dedicate much time to perfecting yoga poses. But it is not necessary to plan ahead to practice yoga. A few minutes here and a few minutes there will add up and can make a difference in the quality of our lives. And you can not only do the gentle yoga exercises in this book anywhere and anytime, you can do most of them regardless of the kind of body you have or how fit or flexible you are.

Traditionally, yoga has been practiced to attain knowledge, serenity, and enlightenment. Yoga can also create skeletal realignment, release tension, and modify old mental and emotional patterns. Our minds live in the future, always wondering about what is going to happen next. Our bodies live in the past, holding on to every memory, including the traumas we have experienced. When we practice yoga, our intent is to bring the mind and the body together in the present moment, allowing change to take
