It seems as if every time you turn around there is another diet plan being touted as the miracle answer to all that ails you, especially excessive weight. Gluten free and vegan diets do not necessarily fall into this category! Each has become progressively more popular, however the reasons behind this type of lifestyle change goes far beyond losing weight.
There are many different reasons people consider drastic changes to their diet and lifestyle. Many times health is a major motivator, especially when it comes to eliminating gluten from your daily diet. Here are a few common reasons individuals choose to live a gluten free vegan lifestyle:
You are a vegan and discovered you have gluten intolerance or celiac disease
You are concerned with the ethical treatment of animals slaughtered for meat production
You want a healthier diet filled with rich, live foods (plants do not have to die to provide a meal.)
Meat and processed foods are expensive
You have suffered various ailments over the years that are only alleviated with a gluten free diet
If you have been considering this shift in eating habits, you should understand what it means to be vegan and how gluten can cause various issues for someone who is sensitive to wheat proteins.
Gluten
Gluten is a protein found in foods processed from wheat and related grains. Many people are shocked to learn just how many items at the grocery store contain gluten or are gluten contaminated. For many people this is not a big deal, but for those who suffer from gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, it is a very big deal indeed.
Celiac Disease
In many circles the use of the phrases gluten intolerance and celiac disease are used interchangeably, however recent research suggests intolerance may have a much broader scope than celiac disease. To date, however, many medical journals may use the
