About this ebook

It was considered a social triumph for the houses of Neven and Grey to finally be joined. Lord Samuel Neven’s dalliances were considered to be norm by most standards. A man couldn’t possibly be expected to contain his masculine impulses at all times. Aside from the lack of children, Erica’s marriage had met all expectations... except for her own.

Erica desperately wants something more than a “good match," which was foolish for a woman in her station to expect. What she doesn't realize is that her husband feels the same...

    Prologue

And do you, Viscount Samuel Shelton, take the Lady Erica to be your lawfully wedded wife?

Despite the tightening in his throat, Lord Shelton’s voice to remained steady as he announced a firm, I do.

The bishop continued to drone on with words about commitment and unity but Samuel heard none of it. The part he had been most anxious about was finally over. She was now his by law and the thought made him ecstatically happy.

Samuel risked a glance over at his bride as the bishop turned his back to issue a blessing over the ring. A curtain of white lace shrouded her face. Samuel knew that the heavy veil was the best money could buy but he would have preferred being able to see her expression. Was she as excited as he was?

Samuel had lived his entire life—all eighteen years of it, anyway—in the shadow of his formidable father. Never once had he felt like he was master of his own fate. His job was to be a dutiful son by not squelching his fortune and to learn the ropes of running his family’s estates.

If anyone had bothered to ask he would have said that his preference would have favored an army career. But as the sole male heir to one of England’s oldest and most respected earldoms, Samuel had no choice whatsoever in his profession. He would one day succeed his father become the next Earl of Neven, which meant he must produce heirs as soon as possible.

Even his marriage—the most anticipated event of the season—had been decided and arranged for him. He and Lady Erica Grey had met in person less than a dozen times. He knew that she was the daughter of an earl—his father’s close friend—and stood in possession of an extremely handsome dowry. He also knew that she was one year younger than him and given the strictest of upbringings. Besides all these commonplace facts they were complete and utter strangers.

And yet his excitement refused to be squashed.

Samuel may have had no say in anything about his life’s direction thus far but after today that would all change. Erica was his to protect and no one else’s. It would be his responsibility to make sure she was happy and cared for. They may be strangers now but he felt certain that they could make a good life together.

I now pronounce you man and wife, the bishop announced with impressive severity.

A smiled tugged on Samuel’s lips as he leaned in to lift the veil from his bride’s face. There would be no kiss here in the cathedral, as was customary among the aristocracy. But the thought of
