      THE WAY WE LOOKED THE WAY WE LIVED 1900—1950

      America was different in 1900. Gainesville. and Hall County were different. It was truly another age. This region was rural and agricultural, yet there was a certain sophistication to the city. Streetcars. Colleges. Fine Homes. Of course, there was the dirt-poor side, too.

      The first 50 years of this century saw dramatic changes, locally as well as nationally—some good, and some bad.

      Quality photographs from this era are not easy to come by, it turns out. This is partially due to the fact that photography was still in its developing stages in the early part of the century. Also, not many people have methodically kept pictures of anything other than their families. Even so, I invite you to watch as the first half of the century unfolds within these pages.

      SUNDAY OUTING AT CHATTAHOOCHEE PARK. Young people pose below the pavilion during a Sunday outing at Chattahoochee Park, probably about 1910. People traveled by streetcar from all over Gainesville, and out Riverside Drive to the park for picnics, outings, dances, and fun. Launches and boats could be rented at the park.

      MOUNTAIN RESORT PLAYGROUND. (Above) Gainesville’s reputation as a resort town was enhanced in 1908 when Dunlap Dam was built on the Chattahoochee River, creating Lake Warner. The Dam was privately constructed, along with a hydroelectric plant, to furnish electricity to the area. Later, the company combined with others to form Georgia Power Company. Chattahoochee Park, on Lake Warner at the end of Riverside Drive, was easily accessible by streetcar and became one of the region’s most popular recreational areas. (Below) A streetcar is pictured
