      Vinnie Greco is a scary guy. Fists like clubs, face like thunder. When he leans across the bar and tells you he’s going to break your face, you believe him. Trust me.

      I’m serious, Ethan, he said, his beery breath blasting me in the face. I don’t see some money off you by the end of the night, I will break your face.

      But my face is all I got, Vinnie, I protested, shifting uncomfortably on my bar stool. And I’m getting paid for a big job any day now. Just waiting for the cheque to clear and I’ll be right in here to pay my tab.

      Here was Bevanda, Vinnie’s cosy little bar on the nice side of town, the kind of place you’re not ashamed to bring a date, if she’s cheap. Or you are. And the cheque was a big fat lie. I hadn’t had a job in almost a month and my funds, always pretty low, were now desperately low. I’d hoped Vinnie would give me a pass for the night – he wasn’t the sharpest tool in the box and usually believed my 'the cheque’s about to clear'
