About this ebook

Despite his employment contract, Jal Vorn is one of the exiles to a unique planet with unknown long term heath risks.
When he arrives on Blue Star World, his supervisor, Nartar Convre, tries to demote Jal Vorn from skilled computer programmer, to low paid clerk.
Jal refuses and is fired, on the spot, again despite his employment contract.
Jal manages to find employment with the Firver, aliens who run Blue Star World.
Nartar Convre then finds a loophole in Firver law that will allow him to subject Jal to a sequence of death duels, against larger, stronger foes.
Jal is forced to fight. However, Jal was a national champion fencer. Under Firver law, that makes Jal equivalent to a Fiver Noble.
At the first of the death duels, Jal is faced with an opponent who's hugely strong and nearly twice his size.
The Firver then announce, “Mr. Arvan Glencie, Lord Jal Vorn has accepted your challenge and he will fight you with the traditional Noble weapons of sword and dagger, as is his right.”
Despite protests by Nartar Convre and Arvan Glencie, the duel proceeds as scheduled.
Jal wins the duel and then finds that he feels a marked boost in his being and a great hunger, as a result.
After a few duels, Jal is ordered to report to on Kyra, for counseling. Jal doesn't need counseling, he wants Kyra. However, Jal is too short for Kyra, but a measurement reveals that Jal is growing.
Jal and Kyra then conduct a sort of distant relationship, with Kyra not too interested in a man as short as Jal and a man who risks his life on a regular basis.
Kyra, however, begins to see the changes in Jal.
The war that the Firver are fighting isn't going well. Jal is helping the Firver effort, but he can only do so much.
It then becomes likely that the Firver will have to abandon Blue Star World.
In order to have a chance to leave, if the Firver leave, Kyra moves in with Jal.
Then the Firver's enemy moves in a giant battlewagon and it appears that the inhabitants of Blue Star World will become slaves of the Firver's enemies.
However, Kyra is Jal's lady and he has to figure out a way to prevent the enemy from winning Blue Star World.
With the help of Kyra and some of the Firver ladies, Jal develops a desperate plan that may let them survive as free people.

I'm the co-author, with Sunset Thomas, of Anatomy of An Adult Film.I have 48 novels and over 299 short stories currently published.I spent my early years in the part of Los Angeles known as the South Central. I was known as Whi' Boy, which was sufficient to identify me in that place. I'm a skilled Kung Fu player, using a system that I learned from a Korean I knew only as 'Pak.' It would be easier to tell you the places that Pak wasn't wanted by the police, rather than the places where he was wanted by the police. Pak's Kung Fu system, augmented by some bits and pieces from some Chinese practitioners is quick and effective, or I wouldn't be alive today. My early education was mostly obtained by stealing books from the public library (I always returned them and the Librarian even began to provide me with reading lists.) I did go to high schools, but I never really learned anything there. I eventually graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles, UCLA, with a degree in mathematics.I work as a Systems Analyst and also make a part of my living as a professional gambler (legal in Nevada.) I write science fiction and erotica. My published novels are:Anatomy of An Adult Film (With Sunset Thomas)1. Second Chance: God Killer2. Second Chance: Sky Pirate3. Second Chance: Scroll Seeker4. Chapter 1: Prequel

"Jal Vorn, you signed a contract, when you came to work for us. The contract specified that your work site would be planet Paranda. Unfortunately, your name was mistakenly placed upon a list of employees to be assigned to Blue Star World. Thus, you are required, under the law, to report to Blue Star World. There’s nothing that you can do, there’s nothing that we can do."

Jal Vorn replies, There’s nothing practical that I can do to avoid being forcibly assigned to Blue Star World, that much is true. I do have a lawyer working on gaining for me compensation for violation of my signed labor contract. Assuming that I survive the unknown health risks of Blue Star World, I’ll return to Paranda a very wealthy man.

Jal Vorn, your attitude will get you in trouble, if you’re not careful.

Jal Vorn replies, "I’m as careful as I can be. That’s why I insisted upon a written labor contract, before I signed in with your company. Your company has violated my labor contract. You might consult with your legal people to find out what the monetary penalties are, for such a violation.

The man who speaks for the company says, Only time will see what, if any, penalties are assessed.

Jal Vorn replies, I have no real option, but to wait.

The man asks, I note that you have asked for and received a waiver to allow you to transport to Blue Star World, a pair of rapier swords. Tell me, what do you intend to do with the swords?

Jal Vorn replies, What I intend to do with the swords, is none of your business. However, after I graduated from third school, I won the Agorean National Fencing Championship, Rapier Division. I was to represent Agorea in the Planet Games. I was denied the prize that I won, because the powers that be felt that I was too young to represent Agorea. That matter is now being settled in court. In the meantime, I work out with my swords, my rapiers, so that I can stay in shape to compete at a Planet level.

The man muses, "Yes, I read your justification. I recommended against allowing you to transport your swords to Blue Star World. The various governmental departments, here on Paranda, also voted to refuse you permission. However, Blue Star World is governed by our military allies, the Firver. The Firver allowed your petition.

Jal Vorn replies, Yes, the Firver allowed my petition and yes, I’m taking my swords, my rapiers, with me to Blue Star World.

The man muses, I fail to see the benefit, but you do have a legal right, at least under Firver law.

Jal Vorn replies, It all seems to come down to matters of law, doesn’t it?

The man snaps, You have a lawyer, the company has any number of lawyers. We’ll see who prevails, in the long run.

Jal Vorn replies, That’s up to you. I have had my lawyer file my legal claims. I can now only wait.

The man smirks at me, You can wait on Blue Star World.

There being no useful answer to the insult, I turn and walk out of the room.

    * * *

Nartar Convre, your assignment was to see that Jal Vorn agreed to accept his assignment to Blue Star World. You failed, totally and completely. What do you have to say for yourself?

Nartar Convre sighs, I talked with Jal Vorn, several times. Talking with him is like talking to a brick wall. He refuses to listen to reason.

The man who speaks for the company shakes his head in denial and says, Nart, if reason is used, the company has no case. Jal Vorn was assigned to Blue Star World, only because of a, (ahem,) clerical error. We had hoped to get the young man to agree to the assignment. Getting him to agree was your assignment. You failed your assignment.

Nartar sighs, "I used every argument that I could think of, including some physical persuasion by my underlings.

The man snorts, Nart, your use of a bully boy was unfortunate. Jal is not very big, however, he was a national fencing champion. He is, apparently, very strong for a man of his size and he beat up your bully boy very badly. The company received no benefit from the confrontation and the company now has to pay for the hospitalization of the bully boy. The only reason that you’re still employed by the company, is that we have to provide a certain number of people for our new Blue Star World operation. You will be one of the people so assigned.

Nartar asks, What’s to be my role in the Blue Star World assignment?

The man sighs, Nart, the company is required to assign a certain number of people who have held Manager rank for at least six months. You barely qualify and, as such, you will be assigned to manage a programming task for the Firver. One more screw up and you’ll find yourself on Blue Star World, with no job and no paycheck coming in.

Nartar sighs, With the exception of the trouble with Jal Vorn, I feel that I have done a good job.

Nart, I have made a careful search of the records and I find that you have done no measurable work. Even your weekly reports are just compiled copies of the weekly reports that you require of each of those assigned to your project. You had better shape up, or you will find yourself in serious trouble.

Nartar smirks, My job is to manage a project, not to deliver items. I spend a great deal of time directing the work of the people that you assign to me. My work is difficult, perhaps because of the very low level people that I have to work with.

Nart, your habit of showing up for work at around ten AM in the morning and then leaving around four PM in the afternoon is going to stop. The Firver won’t put up with it. In addition, your attempts to micro manage the work of your people have resulted in a number of complaints. Again, you had better shape up, or you will find yourself in serious trouble.

Nartar sighs and asks, Is that all?

    The man says, That’s all.

Nartar gets up and walks out of the room.

The man sighs to his companions, An intelligent man but a lazy, total incompetent.

    * * *

Portia Lawc, you were hired to do maintenance support on a real-time computer programming task. You weren’t qualified for the work, when you were hired, and you then failed to do any of the assigned work. You managed to browbeat another programmer into doing your work, until he quit. You then threatened to quit, if you were not given a better task. The company didn’t want trouble with the Ladies Legal Center and you were given another task. Once again, you failed to deliver the work. The only reasons that the company hasn’t fired you is the Ladies Legal Center and the fact that we must send a certain number of people to Blue Star World. You have been assigned to Blue Star World and you will report. Failure to report will result in prison time for you.

Portia bristles, Alright, I’m not a programmer. However, I do have management talent. If I had been assigned a management job, the company would have benefited. Now, you’ll face a lawsuit from the Ladies Legal Center.

The man sneers at Portia, We have no choice in the matter. We have assigned a required number of people to Blue Star World. If you didn’t go, another female employee would have had to go. Our legal people have talked with the Ladies Legal Center and they have declined the filing of a lawsuit, in your case. You can quit, if you want. However, you will then be forcibly relocated to Blue Star World and assigned a task by the Firver, once you get there. The Firver don’t have a Ladies Legal Center, but they do demand results from the workers, assigned under their command.

Portia then sums up, I have to go to Blue Star World. I either take the company task, that I have been assigned or I get assigned a task, by the Firver, when I get to Blue Star World. The health effects of Blue Star World aren’t known and I’m to be forcibly separated from my husband?

The man sneers at Portia, When you were hired here, you signed a statement to the effect that you had no work connection with your husband. That statement serves to negate any impact on a forced separation from your husband. You may be interested to know that the company will no longer hire a spouse, when a spouse is already employed by the company. Your case had a major impact on the company decision.

Portia then snarls, I may have to go to Blue Star World, but you haven’t heard the last of this.

The man laughs, You have no choice in the matter, we have no choice in the matter.

Portia sighs and asks, Is that all?

The man smiles and says, That’s all.

Portia then gets up and walks out of the room.

The man sighs to his companions, One less problem for the company to deal with.
