    Excerpt from Chasing Sam

Chapter 1 - The Lecture That Never Was

Siobhan woke up very groggy, but she wasn’t surprised since she had flown half way across the world. She had no intention of writing down any notes, but she was thinking about everything that Dr. Simpson had told her last night. Bambatu had lied to her, and had done it well, at least it seemed that way. Acting like he had no idea who Sam was, and the whole time he and Sam had been friends. How could she not have seen it? She needed to find Dr. Simpson today, to see if he remembered whatever it was that he couldn’t last night.

She got up, got ready, and knocked on his door. No one answered. She went downstairs and caught him paying his lunch bill.

    Hi, Dr. Simpson, she said.

    Hello, Siobhan.

All ready for the lecture today?

Almost, I just have to get things in order, you know. I’m heading to the school now to talk to a colleague and to practice. Oh, but before I go, I’m glad I saw you, he said and stepped closer to her. I remembered what it was that I had forgotten last night, he whispered.

Really, that’s fantastic. What? she asked softly.

It was his last name. When he came to us in France he wanted to be called John Samuels. I couldn’t remember the last name yesterday, which is silly, because that was his first name, after all. When I mailed the letter about Costa Rica, I made it out to John Samuels as well, he whispered, then back in his normal voice, he said, I hope that helps you. I placed a call to Bambatu but haven’t heard back yet. When I do I will let you know what he says. Frankly, I’m as curious as you to know why he claimed not to know Sam. I have to leave, there is a car waiting. I do hope you enjoy the lecture, Siobhan, he said.

I’m looking forward to it. Thank you so much for everythin, you have been so helpful, Siobhan said, smiling as he walked away. John is even more of a common name than Sam. ‘I wonder if his middle name was John?’ she thought. ‘I never asked my dad or my grandpa, and I can’t bother them with it now, but his middle initial started with J, so it more than likely was his middle name. But why on earth would anyone need to use a fake name?

Okay, dumb question, because she was using a fake name because she had people after her. Did uncle Sam have people chasing him? All he did was use his middle name as his first name and his first name as his last name. That’s not very original. He could’ve made up anything. So why stick to something so close to the original name? Argh! This is so frustrating! Was it because he thought he might have trouble remembering it? He uses a fake name, but not too fake, and gives no reason why. If he was being followed or something, I can understand using the fake name, but the whole point of using the fake name would be to get away. In order to get away, you do things you normally wouldn’t, so he wouldn’t have gone to a dig site. So why go to a dig site with a fake name that was only slightly different and not totally different?’ It was so puzzling and she just couldn’t figure it out.

She ordered a sandwich and a drink and went on back to her room to have it delivered. She decided now was as good a time as any to try to call the other Dr. Simpson. She dialed the number that she had been given and got a recorded message. It said that Dr. Lanette Simpson was on a dig and she couldn’t be reached directly at this time. Her assistant was periodically checking the messages for Dr. Simpson. So in other words, they were checking and making sure the important ones got to Dr. Simpson. Okay, that’s not what the message said, but that’s what it meant.

Dr. Simpson, my name is Siobhan O’Donnally, and I am looking for any and all information you might have on a Sam Reilly for my employer. We are trying to find him or in loo of that, settle his estate. This really is of the utmost urgency. I have spoken with your cousin Dr. Jason Simpson, and he was very helpful, and spoke very highly of you. He did say that you knew Sam and that in fact, you knew Sam before he himself did. Please call me back. I don’t know whether you are in the states or not, but my number is 214-362-6800. It would be preferable for me to come to you to discuss things. I can fly out as soon as you let me know where you are, these matters should be discussed in person. This is of great importance. Please call me. Thank you.

Siobhan’s food came shortly thereafter and she ate in silence, still puzzling over Sam and John. See the thing is, that the Society were having a hell of time finding Samantha. First of all, she had completely changed her appearance and was speaking with a different accent. Second, she had changed her name and gotten new ID’s with that name. Third, and most important of all, she knew that her family and friends were going to crack when asked about where she might go. So she knew she had to go somewhere they wouldn’t think of. When it came down to it, it was easy to find somewhere to go, because she was trying to find her uncle Sam. So she wasn’t off having fun, or hiding and laying low. She was traveling the world looking for her uncle with a trail that started over 25 years ago. No one would think she’d be looking for an uncle gone missing for 25 years.

So the Society were running around in circles trying to find Samantha, looking in places they think she might go, when that’s the last place in the would Samantha would go. But that was the thing, you would think that Sam would have figured that out too. If he changed his name, he had to have a reason to change his name. It’s not like you wake up one day and
