    Prologue

    Lyon City, Centuries Ago

Waging war with swords, guns and cannons, mortal men claimed the Lyon Highlands during the day, but when night fell supernatural beings lurking in the shadows overran the land. Instead of steel, iron, and bullets, they wielded curses, hexes, and shapeshifting magic, but it was bloodshed and fighting all the same. Trembling with magical imbalance, the earth groaned as lives were carelessly snuffed out in droves.

Fighting initially on the side of the Council, Havoc thought the Council’s ideals would usher in a radical change in the way the supernatural world was governed. He soon found out when men stayed on the battlefield too long, those ideals began to wear away, leaving nothing but monsters behind.

It didn’t matter whose cause was right and just. Conscience, right and wrong, flew out the window long ago. Channeling his magical energies from within like clockwork and aiming it at whoever was on the other side, Havoc ceased caring.

The two opposing supernatural sides, both the Council and the Rebellion fought for control of the land. The Lyon Highlands was the ultimate bounty. It possessed the most number of ley lines, of raw magical energy, compared to any area in the country.

Considered a rich resource for wizards to draw and channel energy from, the land was also ideal territory for earth-bound creatures like shifters to inhabit, making it easier to draw their beasts from within.

A wizard and Elementalist capable of manipulating not just one, but also all four elements of nature, Havoc was an unstoppable force of nature. When faced with enemies who had no shred of magical talent, he could alter the course of a battle all by himself.

Stop hiding behind your fancy magic, Elementalist. Face me like a man, a hoarse voice hollered, rising above the sounds of screams and battle.

Bloodstained, dirt-covered and exhausted, Havoc sought out the voice. Sensing the rising magical energies gathering from his challenger, he knew he needed to act fast. A grimy and bloodstained figure in a brown cloak stood a few feet from him, untouched and invincible. Seeing the black and tainted wisps of magical energy oozing from the challenger’s hands, a shudder passed down Havoc’s spine.

    Death magic, Havoc whispered.

He, like most wizards, drew their magic from the living energies of the earth, while his opponent wielded the forbidden tools of the art at the cost of losing his soul. The Rebellion had been on the losing end. Where they hiding their final trump?

Wait! Don’t come near him, he shouted at his companions, but they ran onward, a blur of fur, fangs, and magic.

The Council’s men, men Havoc fought side-by-side with, men he ate with and mourned the death of other comrades with, fell under the spell slinger’s feet like dolls. It felt like he’d taken several devastating blows in the gut.

Seeing the forbidden spells made Havoc remember why he joined the Council in the first place. If the land had an official governing magical body, then spells like the one his opponent used could be banned. Lives didn’t need to be wasted unnecessarily.

What the hell is he? Ulfric Silverfang growled beside him. Havoc caught his thick and hairy arm in warning before he shifted.

Don’t go foolishly rushing in, or you’ll end up dead like them.

I can’t just stay away. The bastard murdered three of my wolves without touching them, Ulfic snapped.

Feeling Ulfric’s spiritual bestial energy rising to the surface, Havoc knew he only had a few seconds before fur, claws, and teeth erupted from Ulfric’s human skin. The alpha of the Silverfang pack was more than his comrade. Ulfric became his brother, lover, and his only family when the Rebellion killed his father and brothers. It had been Ulfric who recruited him and gave his life new purpose.

Quiet stolen moments with the werewolf had been the only time the world made sense to Havoc. Sometimes, he wondered if there was something flawed and lacking in him, because killing came so easy to him. Among the other wizards in the Council, Havoc probably had the highest death count, and he wasn’t sure if he should be proud or ashamed.

Claiming that the ideals of the Council had been what he fought for was a farce. Vengeance for his family
