    Faces of Terrorism

The ‘Laws of God’ balance the world through the laws of nature.

"At any time without warning any catastrophe,

can strike anyone. Such a catastrophe is

in the scheme of the process of God’s act.

In God’s acts there is no place for sentiments,

God punishes for wrong deeds and the

Culprit may not remember such deeds."

The true existence of human beings, functions with the dictate of one’s conscience that decides the right and the wrong. Further this leads to the positive and negative thoughts and actions. The positive leads to total peace and the negative to destruction and resultant terror. Terrorism is a knotty problem, which has been plaguing the human society since time immemorial. The definition of terrorism is: It is an act of violence perpetrated by an Individual or a group of people or an organization that harbors a hurt feeling of an injustice done to them or by an imbalanced human behavior. To counter the injustice of the superior power, an individual or a group of people revolt and indulge in terrorist activity, resulting in the harming of larger section of innocent people.

Eye witness of 11th September 2001

Before dealing with the broader vision of numerous categories of terrorism, I am giving a brief description of my experience as one of the eye witnesses who was caught in the immediate after effect of the terrorist attack on 11th September 2001, on the Twin Towers of the world trade center of New York.

I am 78 years old American citizen. I started from my house, at 8.00 A.M. from Lyman Street, Queens Village. As usual I took a subway train and reached my office in 2 Lafayette Street, which is right in front of Number 1 Center Street.  When I came out of the No 1 Center Street, I saw the two towers of WTC on fire. The flames were some 10 or 15 stories, below the top level of the high risen twin towers. The flames were burning the white aluminum cladding of the buildings and the heat was so intense that the aluminum cladding was reduced into white bubbles.

I rushed into my office, kept my bag on my table and I took the elevator and rushed down to see what is happening. It was time for the office workers to come, so they all stood out on the roads and were watching the burning towers. I looked at the raging fire on the twin towers and asked myself, what about the people trapped in the buildings?  I prayed for them. I wanted to see how the firemen reach that height to save the people trapped in there. To have a closer view of the burning buildings, I went near the gate of the park, where the office of Mayor Gulliani is situated.  On the road two persons who were standing and watching, whom I asked what has happened. They said that two planes have crashed into the towers. It was almost 9-25 AM or so, when one of the towers collapsed.  The Tower came down, on the lower stories. The smoke was red and white and later the jet-black smoke and dust rushed towards us. We started running but the smoke and dust caught us in a few minutes.  All my clothes and body was full of dust and smoke I could not breathe, and I was coughing very hard. The smoke was so dense that the visibility was almost nil. Like a blind man I touched someone next to me and I asked which way to go, he said that he also did not know.

The next man I touched was someone in uniform, I asked him which way to go, he took my hand in his and pointing out in one direction and said run in that side as fast as you can.  After I ran for some time the second tower also collapsed which supplemented the dust and smoke.

The police and the firemen had rushed to the WTC, burning towers to save the people trapped.  No one knew that the buildings will collapse in that way, hence all those officers and the firemen were also trapped in the collapsed towers. A large crowd, which seemed a maddening crowd, was rushing in one direction to be away from the effect of smoke and dust. Each person in the crowd was gasping for breath. It was a terrible scene, like hell on earth. All subways were closed. There were no trains, no taxis, no buses and no other modes of communication. I kept walking till my knee joints troubled me and forced me to sit for some time.

Walking across the bridges was a scene to remember. There was a crowd of all sorts of people.  Somewhere at half way while crossing the bridge, one Punjabi gentleman along with his daughter may be 17-18 years old, overtook me. He told his daughter to give me a water bottle.  They had purchased the water bottles on the way.  Despite of my reluctance to take that, they gave me the bottle. This kind human gesture keeps coming to my mind and I wish, I had asked their name or address to thank them. I had left my bag in my office, with lunch box in it. To recoup my energy I took a bottle of apple juice, which gave me some strength.

When we cross these bridges on the train it is a few minutes journey but to walk through the bridge, it becomes a long walk. Somehow I pulled myself through the bridge and reached queens Blvd. at 2-30 PM after walking for over 5 hours.  From there I could rush into a bus going to Jamaica. I could get Q 23 bus which took me closer to my house. From the bus stop on the Hill Side Ave., I walked for about 20 minutes to reach my house.

After reaching the house, I immediately rang up my daughter Lippi and informed her that I reached home safely. She in turn rang up and informed my other relatives that I reached home safely at 5-30 PM.  After that I switched on the TV news and found that the attack on the WTC Twin Towers was a terrorist act.

I washed my legs with steaming hot water, wrapped them in warm clothes and slept for some time. When I was back to normal, I reflected my mind back to the horrible situation created by the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers.

It is hard to believe, that educated persons of good families, took training to handle the planes and then crash them in Twin Towers of WTC and also in Pentagon and also tried to attack the White House. I am wondering what force convinced them to take their own life and consequently killed 3000 innocent people, who had done no harm to them or to any one. If it was a religious fanaticism, then, why did they attack America the most secular nation on this Planet Earth.

Osama Bin Laden who was the possible suspect, who masterminded this, said that the Americans, who were killed in the nine eleven attack were culprits because they gave taxes to USA, who in turn spends that money to help Israel. Such a flimsy point of view is surely not enough to convince educated persons of good family background to indulge in such a heinous crime and harm innocent people. If they did it to save the cause of their religion, it does not hold any logic, because Islam is an established religion and  its teachings are not  based on  such criminal  ways. Islam preaches peace and submission to the Will of God as literal meaning of word ‘Islam’ is peace.

Next month in October, I visited India to see my children there. I discussed this episode with my daughter Harpal Sodhi, a very balanced lady with, an artistic touch in every phase of life, highly educated and has a keen interest in literature and social problems of the society.  She said that these people are sick people, who need a great attention from the right thinking social reformers. She has requested me to analyze, the root cause of terrorism and to suggest the ways and means to eradicate this disease. As far as this incident is concerned, for the great nation like America it did give a shock but its magnitude is hardly more than a mosquito bite which is irritating and the mosquito will be caught and crushed, like a piece of dirt under their right foot.

The answer to the question ‘Why’, has to be found and efforts be made to save the human beings from the sick people who are infected with this disease and who might create such a situation somewhere else.

The word terrorism is a debatable term.  For certain types of terrorist acts the terrorists’ are known as freedom fighters and are honored by a certain section of a society. Hence it is essential to identify the thin line which divides the nature of an act whether it is terrorism or an act of heroism by the freedom fighter.

The logical dividing line is that to kill an innocent person and to highlight the faith of a
