About this ebook

Want to start off the New Year right? For the Christian, becoming healthy is more than just working out more and eating less. For many, it's about the sin of gluttony. What is it? What does the Bible actually say about it? How can you beat it? These questions and many more are answered in this short volume.

My education is in theology and religion. The purpose of this volume is to direct you to the spiritual implications of eating so that you can better understand the reasons gluttony is a sin and how to handle the shame. Most importantly, I want you to know how to win against it!

I am Dan Smith, a sailor and a Christian; a husband and a father. I have been in the US Navy for over 18 years and my single-minded desire is to reach and teach sailors. My biggest strength is mentoring as God has given me both a wealth of mentors who have brought me up in the Christian and Navy life, and I have been able to do the same. I'm grateful for this strength and wouldn't trade it for the world. My wife and I have been married just over 14 years and we have three children, a guinea pig, and a cat.

About the Navy Christian Bullet

End Notes

1. Introduction

It happens every New Year’s Eve. This year I’m going to lose weight and get healthy! I know that bold statement because I have personally made it many, many times. But it wasn’t until I tipped the scales at 260 pounds in late 2013 that I realized that statement had to become more than just a resolution. By the end of 2013, I had already made some strides toward losing that weight, and at the end of 2014, I had lost a full 30 pounds and finished two half marathons!

Is everything fine and pretty now? Not hardly. I still have plenty of work to do in 2015. I want to lose another 30 pounds and drop my half marathon time below two hours (my best is 2:01:20, run on Thanksgiving day 2014). Another thing I have to do is learn how to fully beat gluttony. I tend to get things squared away for about a third of the year, with that time being split around the US Navy Physical Health Assessment (PHA). When pressured, I can get things right. When the pressure is off, my issues with gluttony reappear.
