Georgia, Ellie and Charles (the ghost) - Jim Wagner

    Chapter 1

    The Haunted House

We’re going to the haunted house after school, CJ whispered to Ellie.

She was sitting next to him in English class and was writing the answers to the questions on the poem that Old Ms Chesner had yelled, shrieked and bellowed at them moments earlier.

I did not understand a word that you said, Ellie told him. My ears are still ringing from the poem that Chessy screeched at us."

CJ looked around the classroom. Marta and Wilson and six other kids had their hands over their ears and painful looks on their faces because Old Ms Chesner had been way too loud.

Carla and Robert had blood dripping out of their ears because of the extreme noise and three others had passed out and their heads remained on their desks.

I’ll say it again. Read my lips this time. We are going to the haunted house after school, CJ told her.

Ellie looked at him oddly, I’m trying to do my work here, she informed him.

That poem that she screamed out caused a lot of damage in the room. Some kids are in real pain, CJ replied.

That still has nothing to do with me trying to do my work, Ellie reminded him.

Plus I think that poem is too stupid for words, CJ replied.

Thank you for your NOT very intelligent insight.

Is that an insult? CJ asked.

It most certainly is, Ellie told him quite strongly.

No one has been able to stay in the house for very long, CJ continued.

Ellie shot the question, What does that have to do with the poem? at him.

Not a thing. What does that poem have to do with anything sensible in life? CJ shot a question straight back at her.

Ellie did not have an answer for CJ so she asked, Why are you telling me about a haunted house?

Because you are sitting next to me and I thought that you might like hear about my afternoon, CJ replied.

Well, you got that wrong! Ellie declared.

Everybody has been going there. Now its like a competition about who can go in and stay inside the longest, CJ told her.

The word competition sparked an interest in Ellie. Alright, I’m listening. Who stayed inside the longest? she asked.

Mitten Farrell stayed inside for two minutes, CJ stated.

Mitten Farrell? She’s afraid of mozzies and cockroaches and most bugs, dogs, and cats. She even runs away from puppies! Ellie blurted out.

Well, she’s got the record, no one has even come close, CJ replied.

Two minutes, that’s not very long, Ellie muttered.

We’re going to try to beat it this afternoon, CJ told her.

Who is this we, you are talking about?

Jordan, Darnell and I, CJ replied.

Darnell is a big scaredy cat. He’s afraid of his own shadow, Ellie informed him.

Well, the three of us are going for the record.

Where is this haunted house? Ellie asked.

Its old Mr. Boundy’s house on Clarke Street. He died in there three years ago and no one has lived in it since, CJ informed her.

    Why not?

Old man Boundy died alone and no one found him for five months. They say that his ghost got too comfortable living in the house so it stayed on after they carted what was left of his body away, CJ explained. And this ghost will do anything and everything to keep every person alive or dead out of his home.

    Alive or dead?

Yeah, some ghosts tried to settle in the house, but they were scared away too, CJ told her.

How do you know ghosts were scared away?

    Twayla Skylark told everybody.

What does Twayla have to do with anything? Ellie asked.

Her mother is the psychic and she talks to ghosts every day, CJ added.

Imagine that. So what does this supposed ghost do, make funny ghostlike noises?

That’s the least of it. Kids who have gone in say that there is blood everywhere and knives and swords, even forks, fly through the air constantly. You are lucky to get out of there without some sharp object sticking out of your body, CJ told her.

I don’t believe any of this, Ellie said. You’re making all of this up.

Well if you really think so, go over there and see if you can break the record, CJ challenged her.

I just might do that, Ellie replied. I just might go there this afternoon and walk in the house and break the two minute record.

Good luck doing that, CJ said right as Ms Chesner arrived at their desk and stared down at them.

Ellie saw her look of annoyance and anger and immediately started writing.

Don’t try to fool me, Ellie Henderson. The two of you have been chatting for the last five minutes. What is so important that you are not working on the poetry questions? she yelled loud enough for the whole class to hear.

CJ was about to say, Most things in life are much more important that this sad and sorry excuse for a poem, but he didn’t. He did not want to get in trouble and have to stay after school. He had a plan in mind and it was working out quite well, so he kept his mouth shut.

    Chapter 2

    The Challenge at 3

Ms Chesner stood next to Ellie and CJ for a long time. It felt like forever. She wanted to make sure that they did their work.

Ellie did not dare stop working on the questions, but CJ was not all that concerned. He wrote a few words and then sat back and took a break.

Ms Chesner saw that he was working very randomly and every time that he stopped she pointed at him and stated very loudly, I did not hear the bell, there is no reason to stop working, CJ! Or do you want to finish your work after school?

That got CJ working again, even though he only worked for a minute or two and then Ms Chesner had to threaten him once again, CJ it looks like you and I are going to be spending some time after school together, she told him.

I would very much like to do that, Ms Chesner, but my mother is picking me up at three o’clock because I have a very important doctor’s appointment to go to, CJ lied to her.

Its lucky that I have your mother’s phone number in my phone, Ms Chesner told him, I’ll let her know that you are going to be late.

My mother has had this appointment for this Wednesday for months, CJ continued to lie.

Well it’s a good thing that today is Tuesday, then, Ms Chesner told him.

Tuesday? Today is Tuesday? I don’t have to go to the doctor’s after all, CJ continued to lie to get out of Ms Chesner phoning his mother.

Well, I expect all of the answers done before you leave the classroom then, Ms Chesner replied as she walked away.

What are the answers to question six, seven and eight? CJ asked Ellie.

I’m not going to tell you! Do your own work! Ellie yelled at CJ.

You don’t have to yell at me!

Yes I do. You got me in trouble and now you want me to help you with the work that you did not do, Ellie told him quite strongly.

Well, someone is in a bad mood today.

I wasn’t when I came into this class, and I only became angry when you came and sat next to me, Ellie told him.

I did not have any choice. Old Dragon Chesner made me sit here!

All you have to do is do your work, that is not too hard, is it? Ellie asked.

You sounded like a teacher when you said that, CJ shot back.

I don’t know why I have to it next to you. For me its pure torture!

Oh and I really enjoy sitting next to the most uptight year ten that I know, CJ told her.

And what is that supposed to mean?

You’re smart, you figure it out! CJ replied very forcefully as he smiled at her and winked.

She hated that. She hated the way that CJ could say the strangest and the most hurtful things and she, down deep liked sitting next to him.

He was not the best worker in the world, but the things that he said were funny. Everyone laughed at him when he said something, anything really.

And now he set her a challenge. He told her that no one had spent more than two minutes in the haunted house, and she was going to show him and everyone else at Trinity Bay that she was capable and brave enough to set a new record.

How hard would it be to stay in the house for two minutes and ten seconds? she asked herself.

"I’ll come to school tomorrow and announce the new record,
