Ryan Foster will be at the Fiesta

    This afternoon

    Get the story or else.

Charity Smith crumbled up the little Post-it note her boss had left on her computer’s screen and threw it into her trashcan. What the heck did he think she was doing? Painting her nails? Having her hair done? Getting a facial?

She had been chasing after this darn story and nothing else for the past two days. Nothing else, except for her troublesome, much-loved fifteen-year-old brother, but that in itself was a whole other story.

Besides, how could her boss really expect her to track down the media-shy, Ryan Foster? The guy had avoided the press like the plague ever since his billion-dollar computer business took off two years ago. And she wasn’t even sure what he looked like since he had an annoying habit of covering his face whenever the press was around.

Yet her boss was convinced she could find Foster. Ever since Ryan Foster’s newest computer game became the number one selling game in America, and the fact that Tell All magazine named him one of the most sought after bachelors, he was hot news. Her boss wanted a piece of it and he wanted it for the Sunday paper. That left Charity today, Friday and Saturday to hunt down the elusive billionaire.

    ~ * ~

Ryan Foster knew he was crazy. His brother’s Mexican restaurant, the Fiesta, was swarming with reporters. He shouldn’t have come, but helping his brother, Mack, with these charity events had become his way of coping with the death of his beloved niece, Alexis.

Besides, in his disguise as Bubba the Clown, he should be pretty safe from all the reporters. Plus, he had promised a certain child from the local hospital a balloon today, and he wasn’t about to break a promise to a five-year-old. Especially to one as cute as she was.

Here you go, Jess, he said, stooping down next to her. Here’s the balloon I promised. He handed her a balloon shaped like a cat.

Wow, thanks. Yellow is my favorite color in the whole wide world. Jessica smiled as she took the balloon. And I love cats.

He patted her bald head, caused by chemotherapy treatments. You’re welcome, sweetheart. What are you going to name him?

I think I’ll name him Ryan.

He smiled at Jessica. That’s a great name. He stood. Well, take good care of him, and I’ll see you after my show.

You won’t forget to bring me that fried ice cream you promised, will ya? she asked, leaning forward, her eyebrows arched in question.

Should I bring some for your cat, too?

Oh, yes, please. Me and my cat love fried ice-cream, she replied, bobbing the cat’s head up and down. We both love it!

Okay, kiddo. I’ll see you later.

He waved goodbye to Jessica and her mother and turned toward the stage. He knew he’d better hurry and perform his clown act because it was almost time for the children from the hospital to leave. But the moment his gaze fell upon the blonde in a nearby booth, his feet glued to the floor. She had silky, shoulder-length hair and vivid green eyes. And she had a lot of dangerous curves; curves that could make a man lose control if he wasn’t careful. Without a doubt, she was by far the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.

Unfortunately, she didn’t look too happy, nor did the scowling teenager beside her. What were they so upset about? He hoped it wasn’t the food or service.

He should do something to turn the situation around. He’d wanted to make sure all the kids from the hospital had a fun afternoon. After all, who knew how many afternoons they might have left?

What the heck, his show could be postponed a little longer, couldn’t it? Besides, he knew he had a certain charm, and without a doubt he could make both of them smile and still have plenty of time to perform his show.

Charity Smith stared at her younger brother, Kirk, across the table from her. She wondered what on Earth she was supposed to do with him. Ever since their parents had passed away last spring, he’d been in more trouble than not. His therapist told her it was his way of dealing with his anger over losing their parents, but understanding why he acted the way he did didn’t make things easy for her.

Kirk, please eat something, she urged, pointing to his untouched, over-flowing plate.

He glared at her. "I’m not hungry! Why did we have to come here? Who are all these weird kids? Why aren’t they in school?"

She bit back the retort on the tip of her tongue about him being here instead of school. She’d been called on her way to cover this story because Kirk had been in another fight and was being suspended for the rest of the day. Because I have to find—

Excuse me, interrupted a funny-looking clown wearing a large, bright green apron with a dozen or more different colors of balloons dripping out of its numerous pockets.

We don’t want any, Kirk said without a smile, glancing down at his plate.

Charity frowned. Not even a silly clown with his purple and yellow hair and big red nose could make her brother smile. Her heart ached for Kirk, and she wished she could make things all right for him again.

Excuse me? the man asked with a sense of humor in his voice.

Kirk glared up at him. We’re not interested.

Not interested? the man replied, grinning as he scratched his head. But how can you be—

Kirk crossed his arms. "I don’t want a stupid balloon."

Sure? I could make you an airplane.

Kirk, Charity interrupted, nudging him. Why don’t you get one? It could be fun, and all of the proceeds are donated to the hospital.

Oh, don’t worry about paying for one, Miss, all the children from the hospital get one free.

She stared at him. From the hospital? Good grief, did he think Kirk was from the hospital? No wonder he was trying so hard to cheer up her brother.

The clown took a red balloon from his pocket and began blowing it up. You think about what kind you want, in the meantime I’ll make one for your—

    Sister, Charity added.

He quickly twisted the balloon into a heart and smiled at her. You’ve captured my heart, he said, finishing the balloon.

Charity couldn’t help but smile. What a romantic clown, not to mention his deep blue eyes could capture any woman’s attention. Even in his clown suit, she could tell he worked out. His body was hard and lean.

Too bad Kirk wouldn’t just give the guy a break and let him make a balloon for him. After all, the guy was trying so hard to win her
