    About the Author

    Virginia City

They roll into Reno at noon, the four of them—Carl and Mac, Sandy and Jill on the back. All morning, riding down I-5 from Grants Pass, Oregon, then across 44 through Lassen National Forest, they’d seen motorcycles.

Carl stopped counting at Shasta City. Every time they pass a gas station or a diner and see another half dozen motorcycles, Carl feels a stab of excitement. He knows where they’re going because he’s going there, too: Street Vibrations in Reno—30,000 bikes!

Goose bumps pop up on his arms and chest. He can see them on his arms and wonders if Sandy notices.

Damn! The casinos sit on the tabletop of the desert like giant cereal boxes—the kind with toys in them, the sugary kind you’re not supposed to eat when you’re grown up. He’s never been to Reno, but he has a lot of interesting ideas about what goes on in those casinos.

The temperature is rising by the minute; he can feel it on his face. He loves this dry, desert heat that sucks out any last moisture from his Oregon flesh.
