    ONE

    Two Sisters

Alissa was a tall strong willed eleven year old, with blondish red hair, freckled cheeks and an urge to explore. Her little sister was seven years old and had sandy colored hair, big brown eyes and had an imagination filled with all kinds of exciting things. They lived out in the country on a big farm, on a long dusty road named Curtis Road. Their house was a typical house for that time, with yellow siding and green shudders. The yard was neatly trimmed, with brightly colored flowers and bushes, and had a cute little garden where their mom grew tomatoes and green beans, and a whole lot more.

There was also a big red barn that held their dads farming machines. On the far side of the barn, there were neatly plowed fields where their dad planted beans, and on the far side of the fields stood a big dark woods filled with tall oak and maple trees. The woods covered what Alissa thought were miles and miles of land, and since Alissa was so young, she had only been out there a few times. Alissa never really liked the woods. They were big and dark and once when she walked into them she was sure she had heard a whisper of her name, coming from a small patch of vine twisted berries. However when she told her mom about what she had heard, her mom gave her a tolerant knowing smile and told her that berry bushes do not talk.

When Alissa kept telling her mom she was sure they did, her mom patiently smiled, and walked out to the woods with her. Her little sister was trailing behind teasing Alissa about beans that were planted in the fields, and how they wanted to talk to her. Once they made it to the bush her mom spoke quietly to the bush, and of course no response came back, she then looked through them, showing Alissa that all was okay. While walking back to the house across the hot fields, her mom promised to make lemonade when they got back, and that she did.

Later on after a bath, and after being tucked into bed, Alissa looked at her mom, Mom, what if there was a ghost in the woods? her mother smiled at her,

Alissa, those woods are not haunted, what you heard was a rustle of a bush, maybe even a squirrel chattering and your imagination made you think you heard more. Alissa smiled, knowing her mom was probably right, she rolled over, and her mother quietly left the room, turning off the light. Lying in the moonlight that came from her window, Alissa smiled and went to sleep and dreamed of talking squirrels, and magical fairies, all the while ignoring her sister who shared a room with her.

    The Secret of Ten

I do not care what you say, leave me alone, PLEASE! Alissa yelled at her sister as she sat at her desk drawing in the bedroom that she shared with her sister. Sarah had been bugging her to go outside and play, and now was teasing Alissa by saying that a Squirrel wanted to talk to her outside.

Fine, be that way, ask me if I care. Sarah said as she stomped out of the room and down the steps. Walking into the dining room her mom stopped her, standing there with her hands on her hips her mother asked sternly,

What is the yelling about, are you two fighting? Sarah looked at her mom knowing she was close to getting in trouble, as her mom hated the girls fighting.

No, Alissa just got mad at me because I asked her to come outside and play, she is being unsociable. Sarah lied. Her mom looked at her, with a knowing look.

Well, maybe she doesn’t want to go out into the heat, they say it is supposed to be ninety five today, and it is fast coming to that. You young lady, might also think of playing in your room today instead of going outside, that is if you can get along with your sister. Sarah didn’t like it inside, she loved it outside, where she could play and wander, she wanted to check out the woods, but knew her mom would say no to her.

I like it outside mom. I want to go build a fort by the barn. Her mom smiled as she knew her Sarah well. She always had an adventure and was always using her huge imagination. Sarah was known to have a big one, always dreaming of talking butterflies, fairies and dancing mice. Her dad always joked that if he had her imagination, he would be able to write the next bestselling fantasy book. You see Sarah’s dad was not only a farmer, he also liked to write, and was always on his computer in his off time typing away, the keys clattering as he stared at the computer screen.

Can I please go outside and play? Sarah begged, her mom smiled a knowing smile, there was no stopping Sarah from the outside in the summer, no matter how hot it was.

You get too warm you come in for some lemonade, okay and also no playing in the barn, that thing is not safe inside. It is eleven, why don’t you eat a sandwich before you go outside. How about peanut butter and jelly? Sarah stood on her toes, and then jumped up and down happily.

Sure mom, I love PB and J! She then ran up to her room, as she ran into the room, Alissa ignored her, she had her Ipod ear buds in, Sarah looked under her bed getting her little bug net. Their room was upstairs, a large room with a bed on each side of the room, Alissa’s side was neat and orderly, with her desk on one wall, and posters covering the walls of all kinds of bands and things. Sarah’s was a mess, her bed was unmade and her clothes were on the floor in a pile. No matter how many times her mom made her clean it, her side was always messed back up within a day or so. Sarah out of spite walked up to her sister deciding to irritate her one last time before leaving. Tapping her sister on the shoulder Alissa turned in her chair, What? Alissa said pulling her ear buds out of her ears. Sarah looked at her smiling. When Alissa gave her sister a withering look, Sarah laughed and ran back downstairs. She ran into the kitchen, and her mom had the sandwich already made sitting on a paper towel, with some chips next to it. Sarah grabbed the paper towel with the sandwich and chips on it, and ran for the door.

Hey, remember what I said about coming inside to get some lemonade if you get hot!

I will mom, I promise. She said heading outside happily.

Alissa sat at her desk and was bored, she looked at the paper of the neatly drawn house and flowers that she had been working on, it looked just like the million other drawings she had made that week. She stood up looking out the window, seeing Abbie their dog under the tree with the Frisbee in her mouth, and then she turned irritated. This summer was boring. She usually had lots to do but this year it was hot and dry, her dad’s fields were getting brown, and she was worried about not being able to help her mom make jam and can green beans this year, as the garden was not doing very good due to the heat. She walked downstairs, and her mom was in the kitchen starting to make a cake. "Mom, do you think we will be able to make jam
