I used this to quit nicotine replacement after eventually having stopped smoking myself and it worked. No nicotine in four months, I am sleeping better and feel free for the first time since I was 16. Thank you.

TO ROBIN HAYLEY

ALLEN CARR’S EASYWAY

Allen Carr was a chain-smoker for over 30 years. In 1983, after countless failed attempts to quit, he went from 100 cigarettes a day to zero without suffering withdrawal pangs, without using willpower and without putting on weight. He realised that he had discovered what the world had been waiting for – the Easy Way to Stop Smoking, and embarked on a mission to help cure the world’s smokers.

As a result of the phenomenal success of his method, he gained an international reputation as the world’s leading expert on stopping smoking and his network of clinics now spans the globe. His first book, Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking, has sold over 10 million copies, remains an international bestseller and has been published in over forty different languages. In 1998, he was invited to speak at the 10th World Conference on Tobacco & Health – the first non-medically qualified person ever to receive such an honour.

Allen Carr’s Easyway method has been applied to a host of issues including alcohol, weight control, children smoking and fear of flying. Alcohol and weight control consultations are available at a selection of his clinics and there is also a corporate service to help employees solve their smoking, alcohol and weight problems.

Hundreds of thousands of smokers have successfully quit at Allen Carr’s Easyway clinics where, with a success rate of over 90%, he guarantees you’ll find it easy to stop or your money back. A list of these clinics appears at the back of this book. Should you require any assistance or if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your nearest clinic.

Sir Richard Branson

His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and my staff.

Carole Caplin

For the past 20 years or so, I’ve been sending clients wishing to stop smoking to the clinics run by Britain’s internationally renowned quit smoking expert, Allen Carr. Allen has a remarkably high success rate at his worldwide network of clinics… I believe it’s a public health scandal that the taxpayer-funded quit smoking authorities in this and other countries don’t seek Allen’s advice and guidance as many major international companies do.

Ruby Wax

It didn’t take any willpower. I didn’t miss it at all and I thank God every day that I am free.

Ellen DeGeneres

I stopped smoking… I read this book by Allen Carr. It’s called The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. Everyone who reads this book stops smoking!

Ashton Kutcher

I read this book by this guy Allen Carr and it’s called The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, and the great thing is while you’re reading the book you get to smoke… this guy’s brilliant. And you get to the last page and he says, ‘All right, light your last one,’ and you’re like, ‘I don’t know if I want it – but, OK, if you say so, Allen.’ That was it and you put it out and then you’re just done. And I haven’t smoked since…

Anjelica Huston

Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking program achieved for me a thing that I thought was not possible – to give up a thirty-year smoking habit literally overnight. It was nothing short of a miracle.

WHAT DOCTORS SAY ABOUT

ALLEN CARR’S EASYWAY

I have observed Allen Carr’s Easyway method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.

Dr Anil Visram B.Sc, MBBch, FRCA, Consultant,

Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, Royal London Hospital

I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the success and fame of Allen Carr’s Easyway, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.

Dr PM Bray MB, CHb, MRCGP

"I do not know of any other method which approaches the effectiveness of Allen Carr’s Easyway. The success rates you achieve are far in excess of anything known to me or my colleagues.

I will therefore happily continue to recommend Allen Carr’s Easyway both professionally and personally."

Dr Ricardo Serralta Gonzalez, National Co-ordinator,

Medical Services, Schweppes

What strikes me most powerfully is that there are none of the withdrawal pangs suffered with other methods. The percentage of success achieved is extremely high.

Dr Jose Alvarez Salcedo, Head of Medical Services, Transfesa

It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.

Dr William Green, MB, Chb, FRANZCP, MRCPsych, DPM,

Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

PREFACE

2013: THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF ALLEN CARR’S EASYWAY METHOD

Over just three decades the method has spread across the globe almost entirely as a result of word of mouth.

Before the internet – chatrooms, Facebook, Twitter, and whatever the next great leap in social media may be – made viral marketing strategies commonplace, news of Allen Carr’s Easyway To Stop Smoking method was passing from person to person, from country to country, from continent to continent, and from one language into so many others.

Far from being part of a clever marketing strategy, news of the method spread around the world for one simple reason: IT WORKS.

Now the power and reach of the internet can only accelerate the pace at which this fantastic news spreads.

This wonderfully fresh presentation of the method uniquely includes a recording of Allen’s voice to provide further encouragement and guidance to the reader.

One of the most appealing aspects of Allen Carr’s Easyway method is that you can carry on smoking while you go through the programme.

If you’re worried about whether you should start reading this book or not (goodness knows, just the thought of stopping used to terrify me), CARRY ON SMOKING AS YOU BEGIN TO READ.

You don’t need to stop, or even decide whether you want to, until you feel you are absolutely ready. All you need to do is have an open frame of mind and follow the instructions. Can there be any better first instruction for a dedicated smoker than Relax and continue smoking?

John Dicey, Worldwide Director, Allen Carr’s Easyway

INTRODUCTION

Just suppose there were a magic method of stopping smoking which enables any smoker, including you, to quit:

•IMMEDIATELY!

•PERMANENTLY!

•WITHOUT SUFFERING WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS!

•WITHOUT PUTTING ON WEIGHT!

•WITHOUT USING SHOCK TACTICS, PILLS, PATCHES OR OTHER GIMMICKS!

Let’s further suppose that:

•THERE IS NO INITIAL FEELING OF DEPRIVATION OR MISERY!

•YOU IMMEDIATELY ENJOY SOCIAL OCCASIONS MORE!

•YOU FEEL MORE CONFIDENT AND BETTER EQUIPPED TO HANDLE STRESS!

•YOU ARE BETTER ABLE TO CONCENTRATE!

•YOU DON’T SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE HAVING TO RESIST THE OCCASIONAL TEMPTATION TO LIGHT A CIGARETTE – AND

•YOU NOT ONLY FIND IT EASY TO QUIT, BUT CAN ACTUALLY ENJOY THE PROCESS FROM THE MOMENT YOU EXTINGUISH THAT LAST CIGARETTE!

If there were such a magical method, would you use it? You’d be pretty stupid not to. But, of course, you don’t believe in magic. Neither do I. Nevertheless, the method I describe above certainly does exist. I call it Easyway. In fact, it isn’t magic, it just seems that way. It certainly seemed that way to me when I first discovered it and I know that many of the millions of ex-smokers who have successfully quit with the help of Easyway also view it in that light.

No doubt you still find my claims difficult to believe. Don’t worry, I would regard you as somewhat naive if you just accepted them without proof. On the other hand, don’t make the mistake of dismissing them because you believe they are grossly exaggerated. In all probability you are only reading this book because of the recommendation of an ex-smoker who attended an Easyway clinic or read this book. It matters not whether you received the recommendation directly or through someone who loves you and is desperately worried that, unless you quit, you won’t be there to go on loving.

Does this mean that you will also need to visit an Easyway clinic? No. There is only one Easyway method. How does it work? That is not easy to describe briefly. Smokers arrive at our clinics in different states of panic, convinced that they won’t succeed and believing that, even if by some miracle they do manage to quit, they will first have to endure an indeterminable period of abject misery, that social occasions will never be quite so enjoyable, that they will be less able to concentrate and cope with stress and that, although they might never smoke again, they will never be completely free and that for the rest of their lives they will have occasional yearnings to smoke a cigarette and will have to resist the temptation.

Over eighty percent of those smokers leave the clinic a few hours later already happy non-smokers. How do we achieve that miracle? You need to book an appointment at an Easyway clinic to find out. However, what I can say is that most smokers expect us to achieve that objective by telling them of the terrible health risks that they run, that smoking is a dirty, disgusting habit, that it costs them a fortune and how stupid they are not to quit. No, we do not patronize them by telling them what they already know. These are problems of being a smoker. They are not problems of quitting. Smokers do not smoke for the reasons why they shouldn’t smoke. In order to quit it is necessary to remove the reasons why we do smoke. Easyway addresses this problem. It removes the desire to smoke. Once the desire to smoke has been removed, the ex-smoker doesn’t need to use willpower.

The Easyway method exists in the form of clinics, books, videos, audio tapes, CDs and internet courses. In each case the method is the same but simply uses different vehicles to communicate it. Which vehicle should you use? It’s a question of personal choice. Some people prefer reading books, others prefer watching videos. In this pack you have the method in book form, backed up by a 70-minute CD.

The clinics enjoy such a high success rate that we are able to give a money-back guarantee. The drawback of other products is that if you fail to understand or disagree with a particular point, you cannot raise it with the therapist, and if you miss an important point the product has no way of correcting the situation. At the clinics you have the benefit of an experienced therapist. Our therapists are all ex-smokers who quit with the benefit of Easyway. They are carefully selected and meticulously trained to be sympathetic to your needs. You are able to question points that you either do not understand or agree with. On the other hand if you unknowingly misunderstand an important point the therapist will invariably be aware of it and correct the situation.

Another main advantage of the clinic is that you are in congenial surroundings with nothing to distract you from the main objective. Although the atmosphere on arrival can resemble that of the dentist’s waiting room, it soon transforms into that of a happy reunion of old friends as you identify and relate to the other members of the group.

However, the main advantage of the clinic is that your problem becomes our responsibility. The fee varies according to location and, if you are one of the 20 percent who require more than one visit, you can attend any number of follow-ups without further charge. Our motto is similar to that of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police – ‘we never give up on our man (or woman)’. If you decide that you no longer wish to quit, your fee will be refunded in full. On the basis of the money-back guarantee, the world-wide success rate at our clinics averages over 90 percent.

Do not let any of the above distract you from the value of this pack. It is a complete course in itself, and thousands of smokers have quit easily simply by reading the book alone. If you are in doubt, why not contact your nearest clinic for further guidance? (A list of clinics is provided at the back of the book.)

1

HOW CAN A BOOK HELP YOU TO QUIT?

If you have read other books that purport to help you to quit, you will already believe that they can’t. Perhaps you are expecting me to tell you how stupid you are for being a smoker and what a weak-willed, spineless jellyfish you are because so far you’ve failed to quit. If so, I assure you, you could not be more wrong. I’ve no doubt that you’ll be expecting me to shock you with horror stories about the terrible damage you are doing to your lungs, of the thousands of pounds that will literally go up in smoke and the lifetime of lethargy, wheezing, coughing, slavery, filth and self-disgust. Again I must disappoint you.

So am I going to appeal to you to think how worried your family and friends are because you smoke and ask you to use a little willpower and discipline? After all, millions of adult smokers have successfully quit in recent years, so why can’t you? No, that isn’t my technique either. If you have read other books on quitting smoking you will no doubt be expecting to absorb pages and pages of charts and statistics informing you of such things as how many years you will lose from your life if you smoke X number of cigarettes per day. You will be pleased to learn that there are no charts in this book.

So what else is there to know and why do I waste your time and mine by telling you what you might or might not be expecting me to say? Why don’t I just come right out and tell you just how Easyway works? Because we are in a chicken and egg situation. When I first discovered the ‘magic’ button that released me immediately and permanently from the nicotine trap, I believed that I could cure any smoker within five minutes. I knew that it was possible to help all smokers to find it easy to quit. What I didn’t realise was how difficult it is to convince some smokers that they too can find it easy to quit. There are two main obstacles. The first is:

FEAR

No matter how calm they might appear on the surface, smokers arrive at our clinics in various stages of panic. They have several basic fears:

•Will I be a failure? And even if I do succeed, will I have to go through an indeterminate period of misery and deprivation?

•Will I ever enjoy a meal or social occasion again?

•Will I be able to answer the telephone or cope with stress?

•Will life ever be quite the same again?

•Will I ever be completely free?

A few hours later, over 80 percent of them leave already happy non-smokers, immediately able to enjoy social occasions more and better equipped to cope with stress.

If Easyway will work for any smoker, why do some smokers fail? There are several reasons. A major one is fear. As a smoker you will certainly suffer from some, and probably all, of the fears I have just mentioned. It is these fears that make us desperately search for any flimsy excuse to postpone what we think of as the evil day we have to quit smoking and make us block our minds to the stupidity of being a smoker.

Fear impedes good understanding and this is where the chicken and egg situation arises. If there were a magic button that you could press so that you could wake up tomorrow morning already a happy non-smoker, as if you had never been a smoker, enjoying social occasions more, feeling better equipped to handle stress, never having the slightest temptation to smoke a cigarette or feeling that there was a void in your life without smoking and looking at other smokers, not with envy, but with genuine pity as you would for someone that was forced to inject heroin into their veins, would you press that button?

If you have hesitated to arrive at your answer, the only plausible reason is fear, the belief that the magic
