A Mighty Strange Day
'Twas a mighty strange day
on that twenty-fifth of May,
as the cat on the farm played a fiddle to alarm
that the strangeness of the day had begun.
Blue woke unaware of his cow in the air,
and the dish and the spoon on the run.
Blue left for school as the sun came out,
and a wee, little spider climbed the spout.
The family dog, Bingo, watched it climb
as Blue ran in hopes of making good time.
Blue saw weird sights along his path:
three men in a tub, none taking a bath.
He rubbed his eyes. Was this a dream?
The men rowed gently down the stream.
One man waved, "It’s me, Simple Simon.
I’m off to the fair to meet with a pieman."
Blue walked on and saw with despair,
Mary Hubbard’s garden vanished 'to thin air.
Her food was replaced with bells that were gray.
There’d be no food in Mary’s cupboard today.
Blue passed by a house. It looked like a shoe!
That poor, old woman, oh what would she do?
He noticed a pumpkin with a woman inside.
Why was she there? Was she trying to hide?
Blue made it to school and saw Bo-Peep.
"Blue MacDonald, have you seen my sheep?"
He shook his head no and wished her well,
and told her to look near the farm in the dell.
They went into school and saw little Jack Horner.
He was sitting alone with a pie in the corner.
The teacher, Miss Muffet, had put him there
for jumping a candle without any care.
Then all of a sudden, a girl’s lamb went, Baa.
The children all pointed and laughed with a Ha!
The teacher said, "That’s it! You cannot stay.
Go to your homes, while I eat curds and whey."
The children all scattered as they ran out of town,
while Jack climbed a hill with his bucket and crown.
Blue and Goldilocks, his neighbor next door,
raced down the path. Oh what was in store?
A monkey chased a weasel 'round a mulberry bush,
and a wolf climbed out a chimney with smoke on his tush.
Observing it all was old Mr. Doodle,
who moaned that his feather had changed 'to a noodle.
Off to find the monkey, Goldilocks waved good-bye,
heading into the woods with a gleam in her eye.
Without Goldilocks, Blue trudged on alone
until he saw Bingo with a new dog bone.
Blue plodded along while his dog sniffed for clues.
He followed a scent to a new pair of shoes.
They were worn by an egg that sat on a wall.
The dog yelped in surprise and caused it to fall.
They ran down the hill and saw the King’s horses,
which trotted uphill alongside armed forces.
The grand Duke of York led those ten thousand men.
Overwhelmed by strange sights, they marched down again.
Crossing into his yard, Blue sighed with relief,
and shared with a pig his lunch of roast beef.
He walked up his steps and opened the door,
where three tailless mice sat on the floor.
The clock struck one as Blue entered the hall.
A mouse ran down and fled to the wall.
Blue saw his dad get
