    ANDREW MURRAY (1828-1917) was a church leader, evangelist, and missionary statesman. As a young man, Murray wanted to be a minister, but it was a career choice rather than an act of faith. Not until he had finished his general studies and begun his theological training in the Netherlands, did he experience a conversion of heart. Sixty years of ministry in the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, more than 200 books and tracts on Christian spirituality and ministry, extensive social work, and the founding of educational institutions were some of the outward signs of the inward grace that Murray experienced by continually casting himself on Christ. A few of his books include The True Vine, Absolute Surrender, The School of Obedience, Waiting on God, and The Prayer Life.

      Chapter 1

      Love and Faith

      This is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

      1 John 3:23

      At a certain conference, the closing service was to be held on a Sunday night. Those making plans decided to take for their subject the five great lessons to be learned from the parable of the Vine and the Branches in the Gospel of John, chapter 15. The subject of brotherly love fell to the lot of a particular minister, who tried to decline, saying, I cannot speak on that subject. And I have never yet preached on it. He further explained, You know that I studied in Holland. When I was there the subject of love was left to the liberals. They did not believe in God’s stern justice, nor in the redemption of Christ. They preached that God is love and that is enough. Those who were orthodox Christians were not allowed to suggest that the liberals should be put out of the Church. No, everything should be permitted in love! And so, after a while, the orthodox Christians became strong in their preaching of faith in Christ. However, they mistakenly left the preaching of love to the liberals.

      The Church must learn to do more than simply preach the love of God in redemption. The Church must go further and teach Christians to demonstrate the love of Christ in their hearts by showing love for their brothers. Our Lord and Savior called this a new commandment. Love for our brothers in Christ must be the badge by which the world will recognize His disciples.

      A great need exists for the preaching of true Christian love! Sometimes God allows bitterness to arise among Christians to show them the terrible power of sin in their hearts. Perhaps their feelings of bitterness will motivate them to shrink back from it. How greatly a minister and his people should feel the importance of Christ’s command: Love one another. If we really love each other as Christ loves us, a true life of holiness will result.

      May the readings in this book help you to understand these two manifestations of love. First, the wonderful love of God in Christ to us. Second, the wonderful love in us to God and to our brothers through the Holy Spirit.

      The Practice of Christian Love

      Consider the nature of love: love inclines people to serve their neighbors. People who have a sincere love for their neighbors will be disposed to act with justice toward them. Real love and friendship always motivate us to serve others and never do them wrong. The Apostle Paul wrote, Love worketh no ill to his neighbor (Rom. 13:10).

      Christian love inclines us to be truthful to our neighbors and tends to prevent lying, fraud and deceit. People are not disposed to be treacherous toward those they love. There ought to be oneness among Christians. Love will motivate us to walk humbly among others, and incline us to kind thoughts, thinking of others as better than ourselves. Christian love disposes people to honor one another. We naturally think highly of those we love.

      Love will make us content in the sphere in which God has placed us. We will not covet anything that belongs to our neighbor. We will not envy him for any good thing he has. Love inspires us to be meek and gentle toward others, never treating them with hatred or violence. Love checks and restrains a bitter spirit, for love has no bitterness in it, only a gentle and sweet disposition.

      Love has a sensitivity that prevents quarrels. True Christian love disposes people to be peaceable, forgiving injurious treatment, as Scripture commends: Hatred stirreth up strifes, but love covereth all sins (Prov. 10:12).

      Prayer

      Dear Heavenly Father, teach me how to love as I read your Word and see how you love. Teach me how to love as I study the life of Jesus and see how He loves. Fill me with love for you and my neighbors as your Holy Spirit fills me in my innermost being and guides me into truth for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

      Chapter 2

      Faith and Love

      And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love.

      1 Tim. 1:14

      Your work of faith and labor of love.

      1 Thess. 1:3.

      The breastplate of faith and love.

      1 Thess. 5:8.

      Your faith groweth exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth.

      2 Thess. 1:3

      These verses show us the connection between faith and love in the Christian’s life. Faith always comes first. Faith roots itself deeply in the love of God. Faith bears fruit in love to our brothers and sisters in Christ. In nature, the root and the fruit are inseparable. Likewise, in the realm of grace, faith and love must grow together.

      Too often faith and love are separated. On the Day of Pentecost these attributes were united in the preaching and practice of the disciples. On the Day of Pentecost they demonstrated a powerful faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ with a fervent love for one another. Peter’s sermon could be summed up thus: Believe in the name of Jesus Christ and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Naturally, the result followed: And all that believed were together, and had all things in common…. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul (see Acts 2:44; 4:32).

      During the Reformation a powerful movement took place to establish the doctrine of justification by faith. Yet, at the same time, among the preachers and the leaders of the Reformation there existed an amazing lack of love! So the world was not taught the lesson that God’s love was all-powerful to sanctify the whole life of a person.

      Let this thought sink deeply into your heart: The grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love. As we cultivate faith in God’s love, our hearts will be filled with love to the brethren. The genuineness of our faith in the love of God will be shown by love in our daily lives.

      May God help us from day to day by faith to bear the fruit of this love. May we at all times be living examples of its truth and power, thereby blessing others.

      The Practice of Christian Love

      Love will dispose people to act mercifully toward their neighbors when they are under any affliction or calamity. We are naturally inclined to sympathize with those we love when they are afflicted. Love motivates people to give to the poor, to bear one another’s burdens, to weep with those who weep, as well as rejoice with those who rejoice.

      Love inclines us to fulfill our obligations to one another. Love disposes us to submit to the authorities over us and give them all the honor and subjection that is due them. Love will motivate rulers to rule over their people justly. In love, leaders will seriously and faithfully seek to do good to their followers. Love will motivate people to relate in a proper way to their ministers. They will listen to their counsels and instructions. They will submit to them in the house of God. In love, they will support and sympathize with their pastors and pray for them as those who watch over their souls. Likewise, love will incline ministers to faithfully and ceaselessly seek the good of their people. Love will motivate ministers, as those who must give an account, to watch over their flock.

      Love will dispose children to honor their parents, and employees
