      Chapter One

      "On behalf of the rest of the staff at our world headquarters here in New York, I’m Wes Henley wishing you a good evening. Please tune in again tomorrow for another edition of Global News Tonight."

      Wes’ reassuring, steady smile stayed firmly in place until he saw the camera’s red light click off. He then slumped into his chair and let out a long sigh. Eliza, his executive producer, approached the kidney shaped glass desk with a sympathetic smile.

      Really good broadcast tonight, she said. Considering all the hell that’s broken loose around here.

      Wes nodded in agreement. Not more than an hour before they went on the air, the GNT staff learned that their network, NBS, had been acquired by Sheridan Omnimedia, one of the largest media conglomerates in the country. Ever since the announcement, the mood in the newsroom had been palpably tense.

      It had taken every bit of Wes’ eighteen plus years of accumulated journalism skill to get through the broadcast without betraying his inner turmoil. And now that it was over, he wanted nothing more than to go home and lose himself in a bottle of his favorite bourbon.

      As if sensing this, Eliza said, Don’t get too comfortable. Oliver wants you to have dinner with him and the new CEO.

      What? Wes shot straight up in his chair. Tonight?

      Eliza nodded. I tried to get you out of it by saying we had a staff meeting scheduled. But I only bought you a grace period of an hour or two because Oliver still wants to see you.

      Oliver Warrick was the president of NBS News and a grade-A prick. It wouldn’t have surprised Wes in the slightest if Oliver knew just how uncomfortable having dinner with the Sheridan Omnimedia CEO would be for him. In fact, this dinner was probably the bastard’s own idea. Ever since the last round of contract negotiations, when Wes’ agent went over Oliver’s head directly to the NBS CEO to secure Wes a seven-figure raise, Oliver had it in for Wes.

      Wes let out a huge sigh. Okay, give me a few minutes to wrap things up here and then we can head on over. Where are we going, by the way?

      "You are going to The Winter Grill at the Oaktown Hotel. Oliver made clear I wasn’t invited and that he and the new CEO wanted to talk to you one-on-one."

      Eliza’s absence confirmed for Wes that
