In His Image...Discovering Your God Given Personality Characteristics
()
About this ebook
In His Image presents people with insight about their unique personality characteristics. Unique, because no two people are created identically. Even though the Myers Briggs has 16 type codes no two people with the same four letters will be the same. So don't worry about being categorized or boxed in by the definitions, on the contrary, you will expand your perception of your capabilities. The book will identify your strengths while setting you free to recognize and use parts of your personality you have felt uncomfortable using in the past. One of the greatest values is recognizing some of the predictable characteristics of important people in your life like family members, work mates and even your boss.
Your personality is God given and provides the tools you need to function on this planet. However, how you use the tools is the determining factor in having positive responses from people closest to you. The book is loaded with Biblical principles for relating in a healthy way to people in your life.
I believe you'll find In His Image fun and very informative.

I want to thank some very special people who helped me with the writing of this book. Mike JoAnn Clark who provided an isolated, quiet and comfortable place to write a good portion of the book and JoAnn's insights to the characteristics of the INTJ. Furthermore, Raisa Wilfong taught me so much about the ENFP as we worked together in ministry for so many years. Daivd and Kim deCarvalho serve with Youth With A Mission and are Directors of the Introduction To Biblical Counseling School. They gave Linda and me our start with YWAM and continue to support us and invite us back to teach at YWAM Bases around the world. Most of all I would like to thank my wife Linda. Without her, this book and my knowledge of the contents of this book would not exist. We have spent many hours together not just teaching but going through workshops, certification processes, and talking about the subject of Personality and Temperament differences, our own and others. I thank God for His Word that will bring needed balance to the way we use the wonderful tools He has given each of us in order to function in this world.
Preface
My wife and I have been teaching In His Image
, a relationship development seminar to pre-martial, married couples and singles since 1980. Using the Myers Briggs ™ and the Keirsey Temperament ™ theories, combined with Biblical principles for relationships, we have seen people come to a new understanding of their own and others unique and predictable God given characteristics. As a result, people have been awakened to inborn abilities that had previously been dormant and have improved their understanding of themselves and others.
In 1987 we had our first experience with the University of Nations, the educational arm of Youth With a Mission. We were invited to teach In His Image
at Maka Pala a YWAM base on the big Island of Hawaii. Since that time, we have conducted numerous seminars for YWAM, primarily in their Introduction to Biblical Counseling
school and secondarily in their Crossroads school. Since that first experience at Maka Pala, we have presented this material at The University of Nations in Kona, Hawaii, remote bases at Velar, Lausanne, and Chatel, Switzerland, Santiago, Chile, Salem, Oregon, and Lindale, Texas. As of this writing, we have been traveling to YWAM bases for 25 years, challenging students to become all that God has created them to be. In each experience we have been enriched by seeing God’s hand at work in revealing to individuals these truths; They are His creation, "fearfully and wonderfully made" with a divine purpose for their lives and they are "ministers of reconciliation" called to be an extension of God’s healing hand to individuals struggling in life.
The goal of this book is to equip people with tools that will help them minister effectively to others. The Gospel is imparted through the development of an honest and caring relationship with others. This can be achieved when we learn to recognize, respect, and understand the differences in people and their unique way of approaching life. I’m speaking of those inborn personality characteristics that are inherently different from their particular characteristics. Most people see life from their own perspective. Consequently, they believe their perception is the right
perception. This approach can be very limiting. This book hopes to challenge that mindset while helping people gain greater understanding of those who approach life from a different perspective.
My wife Linda and I use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ™ as an integral part of our seminars. A close study of this theory reveals there are unique concepts each person will relate to and find helpful in developing deeper and more meaningful relationships in his or her life. The New Testament teaches a Christian’s time on earth is to be spent impacting people for the sake of the kingdom of God. Any tool that helps us accomplish this goal is a tool worthy of use.
The MBTI™ has been a very effective tool for Linda and me, especially in our own marriage. We have also used it for the last 32 years in premarital and marriage counseling. It has consistently given insight to their differences and how to appreciate those differences. When we teach relationship principles from the Bible coupled with personality dynamics, people begin to understand one another, sometimes for the first time, and the result is that marriages are healed and family relationships are restored. We pray for those traveling on this journey with us to learn to appreciate their own and others God given unique differences. Then will they discover the freedom to live contently and concentrate on the call He has on their lives.
Forward
Let me begin with a little of our personal history. Linda and I have been married since 1969 and we’re still going strong. We have a great relationship, and it just keeps getting better. I believe the reason I can say this is because we have learned that hard work pays off. We have put a lot of time into understanding one another, and it has been worth every minute of effort. We continue to make an effort to apply relationship principles we learn from the Bible, but we are not foolish enough to believe that we have arrived. There will always be more to learn about each other and those with whom we relate. The pressures and seasons of life, health problems and loss constantly remind us that change happens, and when it does, suddenly we’re viewing life from a new dimension.
However, I can’t say that Linda and I related well to each other from the beginning. This brings me to why we have chosen to write this book. After about ten years of marriage, Linda (whom I love dearly) began to change quite drastically. She was no longer the effervescent, fun-loving, spontaneous woman I had met twelve years earlier when we began dating. She had gradually become more withdrawn, and in her desire to please me, she had restricted her natural behavior in order to become what she thought I wanted her to be; in effect, she had given up much of whom God created her to be. I was largely responsible for this change in her personality, though I didn’t realize it at the time. Without knowing it, I was working hard to get her and everyone else in our family to do things my way, because after all, I had everyone’s best interest in mind and knew the best way
to do things, to see things, to hear things, and so on. For some reason, I thought everyone should be looking at life through the same lenses I used. Any behavior outside of how I would do things needed to be corrected, and it usually didn’t take me long to make the corrections. In retrospect, I thank God for a friend who suggested I read a book titled Please Understand Me.
The following is an excerpt from the first chapter, which is titled Different Drums and Different Drummers
:
If I do not want what you want, please try not to tell me that my want is wrong; or if I believe other than you, at least pause before you correct my view; or if my emotion is less than yours or more, given the same circumstances, try not to ask me to feel more strongly or weakly; or yet if I act, or fail to act, in the manner of your design for action, let me be. I do not, for the moment at least, ask you to understand me. That will come only when you are willing to give up changing me into a copy of you.
[i]
While reading this short paragraph I saw a perfect description of myself hidden in its words. I was the one expecting everyone to conform to my way. This realization, accompanied by the conviction of the Holy Spirit, was enough to drive me deep into the book, where I hoped to find out more about my behavior as well as discover my wife and kids for the first time. This journey started in 1980.
I thought I was doing a good job of being a husband and father, and when it came to providing and protecting my family, taking care of all of their physical needs, I was. However, I was failing horribly when it came to understanding my wife and kids. I really did not take the time to learn to apply the Golden Rule in our relationship:
"Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them—this is the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 7:12) HCSB
The do also the same for them
is the hard part. It is a challenge to understand the people we’re in relationship with. In fact, the little word do
is the key, but it presents the perplexing question: Do what? The answer is very simple: Do those things that will bless the other person. I’m an avid cyclist, I could take Linda on a date to watch the bicycle races, and I would be thrilled to be there, but it wouldn’t be the first thing on Linda’s fun list. However, because I learned to understand her interests, I have a good idea of what I should do to bless her. It would be something along the lines of going to a dinner theater or taking a trip to the San Diego Zoo, or going shopping with her at the mall or just taking a quick, spontaneous trip to get some frozen yogurt. By giving us the Golden Rule He provided us with insight into the character of our heavenly Father:
Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights (James 1:17). HCSB
The idea here is to be the giver. The Bible says God knows what to give us even before we ask.
For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things (Matthew 6:32) NKJV
How does He know? He knows each one of us individually; He knows our interests, our gifts, our calling and our purpose, as well as those personality quirks that, when combined with everything else, make each of us so unique. The wish
part of the verse takes care of itself because the principle of sowing and reaping comes into play. It’s absolutely amazing how Linda and I have really experienced the oneness
of marriage ever since we began taking the time and making the effort to get to know and understand each other in such an intimate way. We’re both blessed as we make an effort to offer our resources to one another physically, spiritually, and emotionally.
Gradually, as I stopped trying to get Linda to conform to my image of the perfect wife, I saw her once again blossoming into that woman I had first met, the one who was full of life. I realized I had been forcing her into a position of trying to live life on borrowed behavior. That will work for a while, but eventually it will come crashing down. God has created each of us uniquely, with a particular call and purpose for our life, and when I began to appreciate Linda for who she is and I even helped and encouraged her to make discoveries about herself, she began to bloom again, and she has become even more beautiful to me.
Why Should You Read On?
This is a book about you and people you relate with. Before you answer the questions on the assessment you must ask yourself some questions; Do I want to know why I function in life as I do? Am I going to be categorized
, or will this experience show my individual uniqueness? Do I want to know my natural strengths and weaknesses? Do I want to know my core needs, those emotional needs that go beyond my physical needs? Do I want to know if I’m in the best-fit vocation? Do I want to know about differences between me and my spouse, family members or friends?
The Assessment you’re about to respond to will become a very revealing tool for you as you continue in this book. However, I must warn you; this is not a novel that you would read for entertainment. From this point on it will take an honest and open assessment of yourself as you continue.
You will better understand the subsequent chapters if you have an idea of your own four-letter Myers Briggs type code. Therefore, I am inserting a short questionnaire that will get you started.
A Word about Personality Assessment Questionnaires
There are many personality questionnaires available both online and in book form, and most of them are fairly accurate. If you do an Internet search using the keywords Myers-Briggs,
you will find several resources that include a personality questionnaire and are free of charge, and many of them will even score it for you.
Linda and I tell our students the questionnaire is just the starting point to understanding your personality type. We used elaborate questionnaires and simple questionnaires. The results have been very similar. They are about 70% to 80% accurate overall. Providing answers for a questionnaire like this is a good starting point for learning about your personality type. But you will make your greatest discoveries as you go through the learning process in the following pages.
As we examine the various preferences and functions of personality in this book, please let this experience be one of personal revelation for you – look eagerly for ah-ha
moments regarding your personality. It is typical during our weeklong seminars for 30% to 40% of the students to change one or more of the four letters by the end of the class as they gain clarity on their personality type.
When answering any questionnaire, think about what you really prefer and what you already like to do, not what you think is required of you or expected of you by someone else in the myriad of environments you’ve experienced. Doing so will only add to your confusion; thus, you never want to answer questions based on who you would like to be, but instead, always answer them truthfully about who you already are.
We have found the following questionnaire to work pretty well, it is also simple and quick. It will take you about ten minutes to finish. For best results answer the questions quickly, and try to remove environmental requirements on your life as you think about your answers. It's all about how you prefer to function in life.
