A Life Rebuilt Over Time - Michael Soldat

    Chapter 1

Warm summer nights were Lydia's favourites for sneaking out of her family's tiny hovel to meet the man she loved. For several years now, she worked by day in a local bakery for a meagre living. By night, when it was possible, she waited until her parents and siblings were asleep before quietly opening the window and slinking away. There was never any assurance of an official, socially acceptable relationship, but Lydia held out hope that the two would be married some day. Her potential beau held a rather profitable chunk of land in the countryside. A slightly older businessman named Charles, he preferred to live in town to keep in touch with his social circles as well as manage his financial business in person. He would send Lydia his family's seal and word of a meeting place when he could see her. Tonight, their rendezvous was to take place in the stable behind a rarely visited inn, located on a beaten road on the outskirts of town.

As she crept around the back of the modest lodging, she saw a rotund, older man standing outside one of the stalls. He perked up immediately after hearing Lydia's faint, sputtering bird call and waved her over with a wide grin. Despite never quite getting their signal right, Lydia and Charles' bodyguard got on rather well. He thought the two were a fine pair, even if their entire romance had to be concealed. Still, the portly guard hoped his master and Lydia could work something out, some day. On occasion, James would even bring Lydia a fancy trinket or an elaborate dress, just to help the couple imagine life together in the open.

Evening, James. Glad to see you again! I imagine my Charles is in there, yes? she said.

Aye, he is! Pleasure's all mine, nothing I like more than to see the master happy, James replied.

He moved aside, presenting the open stall to Lydia. Within, a faint light glowed. Illuminated inside was a handsome, well dressed man with a finely groomed black beard.

Darling, Charles said, embracing his lover. I have... news.

News? What is it? Are you... are you going away again? the young lady responded.

In a way, yes. I have my duties, you know, Charles trailed off, turning away.

That's fine! You've left on business before; I don't see why you should hide from me now. A few days, a few weeks, is it? We can have a delightful celebration dinner upon your return.

    Charles sighed deeply.

No, this will be different. You know my position in society requires of me certain... demands—attending meetings, traveling abroad, all that. This time, though, I am forced to make a more personal sacrifice.

Well, what is it then? Are you selling the estate? Do you have to move? I really can’t see what the big deal is, here, Lydia replied, not taking her eyes off Charles. Her smile was quickly sinking into a fearful frown.

"That's just it, dear. A woman in your position could never see the problems associated with this, nor would I expect you to understand the intricacies of my social obligations. My family has decided... I am to be wed. Not to you, of course, they have no idea you exist—though I wish that they did! No, I am to marry an official's daughter, from the coast. I received the notice about a month ago. Pretty young thing, nothing like you
