About this ebook

Ladon lost his protégé, but he has a mission to take his mind off the loneliness. When he arrives at the lycan settlement, however, he meets a handsome young man who reminds him with every glance exactly how lonely he’s been for many years. The problem is, the man he’s so entranced by seems to hate him.

Kai has been curious about Lord Ladon all this life. He and the vampire are linked in a way he is reluctant to divulge, but soon Ladon demands an explanation for Kai’s scowls and long glances. When they discover they’re mates, Kai is certain it’s a mistake. His mind says they could never work, but can his body and heart convince him to submit and let the fates give him the happiness that has always been out of his reach?

    3152, The Year of Eyes

Ladon let his horse slow to a leisurely pace as he spotted the castle in the distance. As he crested the hill, the surrounding village came into view. His destination lay to the far right, closer to the woods. He had visited the lycans a few times before, but every time some sort of obligation had called him away before he could spend much time with the shamans. Unlike other shifters, who had integrated completely into human society and even adopted their religious beliefs, lycans kept themselves separate and held to their own set of spiritual beliefs, their holy men and their healers still one and the same. Only a few hundred lycans still existed. The children always had health issues when a lycan mated with a human, a vampire, or another type of shifter. Other shifters, for some unknown reason, did not have this problem. Halflings might have some issues, but nothing to the extent of the tragic problems halfling lycans had. Lycans had also been hunted by humans, and sometimes vampires, until about two hundred years ago when the vampire lord in this part of the world had fought to have it outlawed. His descendant, Kyo, ruled the land now.

Ladon admired the landscape as he approached. He usually came in a carriage and missed this view, but he had chosen to take this journey alone. He’d been meaning to study with the lycan shamans, who still practiced alchemy to a great extent, for a long time. As a physician who loved myth and folklore, Ladon had always been fascinated by alchemy. He’d actually had some success with different alchemical processes, and he wanted to learn as much as he could from this visit.

Something else compelled him as well. He couldn’t say what it was, but he felt this trip would be very significant. He had originally planned to bring his apprentice, Shigure, with him, but Shigure had turned out to be his brother’s mate. Ladon was happy for Kyros and Shigure, but now he felt alone again. He hated this feeling, as a year of mentoring Shigure had made him grow accustomed to having a companion. Despite the loneliness lingering over him, he’d awoken that morning refreshed and almost euphoric. Even now, his heartbeat picked up as he admired the horizon and breathed in the fresh air.

Two large, gray shapes moved toward him, and he realized they were giant wolves. While most shifters preferred to stay in human form, many lycans spent a great deal of time in wolf form. The two wolves stopped and waited. Ladon slowed his horse, and the wolves bowed their heads. They then moved to either side of his horse to flank him and escort him into the village. Ladon followed their lead, nodding to the people in the village as they progressed. Everyone moved aside for them, but it seemed to be more out of deference than fear or wariness. One person, however, stood out. A scowling young man with tangled brown hair and bright blue eyes watched them. He stood leaning on the corner of a building, his eyes fixed on Ladon.

Ladon sat back in the saddle, straightening his spine and nodding to the young man, who looked rather handsome under the messy hair and dirt marring one side of his face. The young man did not nod back, but once they had passed he did follow them at a distance. The brightness of the young man’s eyes told Ladon he might be a lycan, not a human, but without picking up his scent Ladon couldn’t be certain. His brothers would never have let such a snub pass. His older brother, Kyros, would have tried to draw the young man into a bantering match with a snarky remark, while his younger brother, Thanos, would have stopped and reprimanded him. Ladon did want to talk to the young man, though he wasn’t sure why. He could feel his presence lingering behind them. Casting one more glance back, he nodded again to see if he’d get a reaction. The young man stopped, crossing his arms over this chest as he licked his lips and narrowed his eyes.

Ladon turned back, perplexed, but then he smiled when he saw Sigmund, the lycan’s leader and seer. He halted his horse and dismounted quickly. However, as he moved to greet Sigmund, he noticed the lycan’s gaze fixed elsewhere. He spun on his heels, slowing his pace, and saw the young man turn and walk away. Sigmund seemed to be watching him.

Sigmund, who is that young man? Ladon asked when Sigmund continued to look at the retreating youth.

Sigmund let out a breath and gave Ladon his attention, an odd smile on his face. His name is Kai, and he’s a long story. His smile grew. But an interesting one. I’m sure you’ll meet him soon enough.

He’s a lycan? Ladon had to make himself stay by Sigmund’s side. He felt almost as if someone stood behind him pushing a fist into his back. He wanted to stop Kai and ask why he’d looked at him that way.

Yes. He’s a loner. A fever a few years back—the one you tried to help quell, in fact—claimed his parents and sister, though he was like this before that happened.

Ladon’s heart felt heavy as he caught one last glimpse of Kai before he turned a corner. I’m sorry to hear that. Sigmund seemed to be waiting for Ladon to say more. Ladon had always had trouble reading the man in previous encounters. Does he have a problem with vampires?

No, Sigmund said after some consideration, gesturing for Ladon to take his horse by the reins and follow him.

Ladon did so, waiting to see if Sigmund would finish his story. They walked all the way to the stables before Sigmund continued.

Actually, he and Lord Kyo are very friendly. Our protector took an interest in Kai when he was young.

Any reason? Ladon asked, remembering his last visit here. Sigmund always did this. He rarely volunteered information, and more often than not he would only reveal things when asked directly.

A sad smile came to Sigmund’s lips. He’s a very unhappy young man.

How old is he? While Kai’s face was youthful, his eyes seemed much older.

    He’ll be thirty next year.

Ladon’s eyebrows shot up. Has he not found a mate yet?

Not yet, but that is only one source of his angst.

Handsome and intriguing as Kai was, Ladon didn’t feel like coaxing more information from Sigmund. He nodded to the servant caring for his horse and moved toward the stable door in hopes Sigmund would follow.

The lycan did, stopping outside and clasping his hands behind his back. I think this visit will prove enlightening. We’ve pulled out many records that have not been consulted for decades.

Ladon relaxed at those words. Yes. I am ready whenever you are.

Sigmund pointed to the great hall in the middle of the lycan settlement, which was more rustic than the human village yet in ways more ornate. Ladon
