About this ebook

From the bestselling author of In Her Shoes, All Fall Down and the forthcoming novel Who Do You Love, Good in Bedis a funny and tender story full of heart.

Cannie Shapiro never wanted to be famous. The smart, sharp, plus-sized reporter was perfectly happy writing about other people's lives for her local newspaper. And for the past twenty-eight years, things have been tripping along nicely for Cannie. Sure, her mother has come charging out of the closet, and her father has long since dropped out of her world. But she loves her job, her friends, her dog and her life. She loves her apartment and her commodious, quilt-lined bed. She has made a tenuous peace with her body and she even felt okay about ending her relationship with her boyfriend Bruce. But now this...

'Loving a larger woman is an act of courage in our world,' Bruce has written in a national woman's magazine. And Cannie - who never knew that Bruce saw her as a larger woman, or thought that loving her was an act of courage - is plunged into misery, and the most amazing year of her life.

I found this book on my book shelves at home. How did it get there and when did I get it? I don't know. I decided to read it, even though it is not my usual type of read.

I ended up really enjoying it. I thought given the title that the book would have more sex, but it was actually pretty tame. The main character, Cannie, is very likable. She complains about being "plus size" although at a size 16 she is pretty average for the United States. The story of her breakup and subsequent second thoughts is interesting and I was rooting for her to find happiness.

This book was hysterical! It deals with a woman who recently broke up with her long time boyfriend, Cannie, who is trying to figure out her life. Her boyfriend begins to write for a newspaper and writes an article titled: "Loving a Larger Woman"....she was understandably pissed. I've read other works by this author, but didn't like any of them nearly as much as I did this one.

A curious novel, this one. It starts off very sharply indeed, but Cannie isn't at this point the strongest of heroines - in fact she does get rather wimpy after a while. However it's perfectly realistic until about half way through when she suddenly ends up being a total success in Hollywood. What??!!! The Hollywood sections are actually very poorly written and it's cliche after cliche, sadly. At this point, the book was heading rapidly downhill to a 2 star rating, whereas before it had hovered somewhere between 3 and even 4 stars.Honestly, it's as if Weiner left the building and someone else - possibly her cat? - was writing this section for her. I can't really think of any other explanation … However, fear not, as all is not lost - the end sections when Cannie returns from pesky Hollywood (hurrah!) are just great and the ending and the eventual love interest are very good indeed. As a result, it gains a 3 star rating, but no higher due to that soggy middle. It needed a far more talented editor, but it's interesting work.

For the most part this is a nice easy read. The best way I can think to describe it is Bridget Jones with a weight problem and several life experiences that are outlandish and depressing all at once. The characters are all very likeable but completely simple. In any case, there are enough funny and cute moments to keep the story moving and the overall book enjoyable.

on Thursday, July 01, 2004 I wrote about this book:

Wow I,ve just finished reading this book and with regret that is.
I really loved reading this book and did not expect that at all.I thought it would be a "trying very hard to be funny book" It was an emotional book. I have been laughing but also on the verge of tears on the last 2 chapters.

    Update February 28-2010.
I finished this book last night and yes I must admit I would not give this book 5 stars now. 4 stars would be better. Really still liked it but I have become more critical because I've read so many good books in the last couple of years. It was still a fun read but also sometimes very unbelievable.Planning to watch the movie some time. Really curious about the sequel.

Spoiler Alert: I would have like the book better if it didn't spiral down to a total wish-fulfillment exercise (protagonist gets a free apartment makeover from her famous movie star best friend, doctor falls in love with her despite the obvious ethical problems this presents) for Ms. Weiner.

Great read. This book should be read by every woman who ever struggled with her weight. It validates that oversized women are beautiful and should love themselves for who they are.

Good In Bed is a funny, heartwarming, realistic read. It is about a woman named Candice Shapiro, or "Cannie" for short. Cannie is a plus size woman living in today's world where there are numerous sterotypes against overweight individuals. Cannie is a writer ofr the local newspaper and feels things are going pretty well in her life until her ex-boyfriend writes a story about her, in a national magazine, titles "Lovong A Larger Woman". Things just go from bad to worse when his Father passes and they come together, in sadness, one last time and Cannie ends up pregnant and alone. As she comes to grips with the family she was born into, the woman she is and the life she has been dealt, she realizes that you cannot undo the past and that she is lovable no matter what size.I will definitely read more from this writer. Her witty & realistic style of writing is very refreshing.

Good in Bed is no doubt a Chick-Lit classic. However the first time I read this book, I could not finish it. I was still in high school, around 2007 or 2008. I could not relate to the main character, Cannie, at all. I felt like she needs to grow up (coming from a teen), needs to move on, and she is annoying.
Now that 10 years have passed. When I saw NetGalley is offering the same book for review, I was willing to give it another try. Since I am not a size zero anymore and older, I am hoping I might be able to understand Cannie more. After reading it, most of the original feelings are still there. The book gets boring towards middle, and talk about her journalism career and her past. All the other scenes are good, my favorites are Bruce's column and Moxie. Cannie really needs to moves on, Bruce has explicitly and publicly said he is done with you many times. The ending is predictable. =(

I didn't like the main character much -- she seemed rather shallow. However, the book was a good read. It was nice to have a story about a "non-thin" woman.

this is the second Jennifer Weiner novel I have read - and I just love her! the characters are really believable and the story line was fresh - I wasn't sure where the novel was headed for quite a while - an unusual thing in this genre! I would recommend this book - I thought it was a great fast read.

I picked up Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner from Netgalley because it is been recommended to me as a modern classic. It was originally published in 2001. I was 39 years old in 2001. I wish it would have crossed my radar then instead of discovering it at age 54. While only 5' 2 1/2", I am considered a larger woman, a plus size woman, rubenesque, or according to health standards obese. That is how I had thought of myself and like Cannie, the main character in Good in Bed, that was the first and sometimes only attribute I saw in myself: fat.

Cannie, the heroine of Good in Bed, learns that her weight is not who she is or what she is. She learns through hard experiences and the love of her family and her friends. There is a huge wall she has to break down to believe in herself. The wall was built by her son of a bitch father who told her at age 12 she was fat and no one would ever love her. In the novel, as in life, karma does not always show up when it should so we do not get to see Cannie's father suffer as he made her suffer or ever acknowledge that he has caused any pain to her or her siblings. If karma was a character, the man would have lost everything he held dear, twice.

Cannie is single and dealing with an ex-boyfriend who wrote an article about loving the larger woman. It humiliates Cannie because although she is not named in the article, only referred to by her first initial, everyone who knows her or the ex know the article is about her. She reminds me a lot of me at that age, late twenties. Although I was already married by then, I still had no confidence in how I looked. My self worth was very much tied to how I perceived others saw me.

The book is excellent. The characters are fully formed, not two dimensional, even the side characters. The dialogue flows like a normal conversation. Cannie does not need a man or a diet to rescue her and make her complete. I wish I had discovered this book when I was younger. It really opened my eyes about how I still see myself.

I really enjoyed this one, especially how the relationships were developed. The progression of the novel happens at a good pace. It's not as light of a read as it appears from the cover, but it doesn't get too bogged down in it's issues either.

As a rule, I don't do chick-lit. I mean, it's not really my cup of tea. But this book ended up on my keeper shelf. It's a fat girl's fairy tale, but it's also alternately smart, funny and sad. I really enjoyed it.

This book was ok, but not one I'd really recommend. It was pleasant to read about an overweight heroine, although helath risks were not mentioned. Much believability needed to be suspended, and the ending was more conventional than I liked. The writing was ok, but the sarcasm became tedious.

First off, let me say the title of this book is misleading and don't base your decision to read on the fact that you think it is solely about sex. It's not. The first chapter won't even give you insight to what's to come later on.Cannie is a writer who decides to take a break from her immature boyfriend only to find out a while later that he's written an article about her called "Loving a Larger Woman." She realizes that she underestimated how well he understood him and has to have him back. At times, some of the situations in the book are a little far-fetched but the character development is great. Cannie is very easy to love, with her sharp wit and loving personality. She is like a sister. At times you want to laugh with her, others you want to cry with her and sometimes you just want to smack her.

Jennifer Weiner said this was her favorite of the books she has written. The best is that it is funny and well-written, notably the non-PC Bruce Good in Bed columns. What isn't so great to read are the repeating obsessive thoughts and conversations about good Old Bruce (ended up simply skipping those parts), as well the eating of those cruel foods - veal and foie gras - and the foray into too perfect Hollywood endings with too good to be true Maxi.

This is the book that got me loving Jennifer Weiner (not just because it's her first). Something about Cannie's view of herself and how she thinks others view her reminds me a bit of myself. I loved that the main character was not a tiny, beautiful woman but someone with a little more depth to her. I loved that despite a bad relationship, Cannie can move on and find something better without compromising who she is. I have recommended this book to everyone who has asked me for a good "beach" read.

OK... so I am reading the reviews of Good in Bed, not really thinking about writing one myself even though I just finished the book and I liked it. I will start with that fact. I liked the book. However, I just have to write something because I keep seeing the words "chick-lit" and "hilarious" and "entertaining". This book may be those things at times but I think a little warning is needed. This is more than a piece of fluffy beach reading. I can't say that it is great literature, but it is well written and the characters are well developed. Cannie is one of the best heroines that I have come across in a long time. The thing is - and the reason for my review - is that it goes to some really depressing places - real places, but depressing. Perhaps I am going through a little of my own "down" time, but this story went places that made me (almost) have to stop reading. I cried. Not "chick-lit" tears but "OMG This is heartbreaking!" tears. So, take this as my warning. Good in Bed is very funny, but it can tear your heart out, too. Some of the plot is the other side of far-fetched but, in the end, it is well worth the journey.
