Chapter One
Achilles Pat
O’Peleon stroked Vee’s arched, sweaty neck as the colt galloped out after the breeze. He’d done well, turning in some impressive split fractions if Pat’s mental clock were any good at all. He’d know soon enough; there was the usual gaggle of track reporters and clockers hanging off the rail to time the workouts. All the horses on the Derby trail were watched closely. Pat sometimes thought Vee couldn’t even lift tail and drop an apple without someone reporting it to the legions of racing fans around the world.
That was true enough for most of the Derby contenders, but leading up to the Wood Memorial this coming Saturday, V-Tach was being watched especially closely. The three-year-old colt, who'd been named Champion Two-Year-Old Male following his win in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, was the odds-on favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, even though not all of the prep races had been run yet. So far, the regally bred golden bay colt of Queen V, the American racing legend, and Tachyon, the champion European superhorse and premier stud, hadn’t put a hoof wrong. A win in the Wood would ensure he went into the Derby as the horse to beat. Vee’s record was at stake also—the colt was undefeated.
Pat turned Vee toward the barns and the colt shook his head, snorting with eagerness. He still had plenty of run left in him, but Pat knew better than to disrupt Brenden’s carefully planned training schedule. His father was a master trainer, with dozens of wins at every track in the world under his belt. But there was one challenge he’d yet to beat—the Kentucky Derby. The Irish trainer had set his sights on this last, great challenge several years ago. Many near misses and misfortunes had followed, as if the O’Peleon name was jinxed when it came to the Derby.
Hey, Pat! Good times out there today,
called one of the clockers. You got the five in one flat.
Pat grinned and waved to indicate he’d heard, but the news didn’t please him. He’d been aiming for one-oh-two, two full seconds slower than they’d gone. He mentally shook his head at himself. He’d been lulled by Vee’s easy action once again. He’d have to watch himself more carefully. Mistiming in a race could lead to all sorts of trouble. Brenden wouldn’t be happy if Vee posted the bullet, the fastest time for the distance, for the morning. We are here to train, not show off, Pat mentally recited in his father’s voice, not that doing so would spare him the lecture.
That lecture came, all right, while he was giving Vee a bath. He’d already walked the colt cool and given him a drink, and although he could have let the legion of grooms do that for him, he preferred to work with the colt himself. Vee had been special to him since he’d first seen the young colt gamboling at his mother’s side. Pat remembered that day as if it were yesterday. Blue sky, crisply pleasant weather, the lush blue-green grass a nice contrast for the white pasture fencing of the nursery farm. Queen V, her dark brown coat almost black, trotted gracefully along the fence, her two-day-old colt keeping up on his long, awkward legs. Something about that awkward colt captivated him. There was fire in his eyes, even so soon after birth.
Son, I was disappointed in the time the clockers are reporting for Vee’s work,
Brenden’s voice came from behind him, and it was an effort not to squeak and jump. It was too fast, as I’m sure you know.
I’m sorry, sir.
Pat turned to face his father, a powerful sorcerer and notable breeder and trainer of racehorses. Brenden was careful not to mix the two occupations, for which Pat was profoundly grateful. Pat had little love for magic, which had stolen his mother away when he was just a boy of seven. Pat chose to work with the horses and only with the horses. He could see the faint disappointment in his father’s eyes every time they spoke. He often wondered which displeased his father more—his refusal to deal in magic or his preference for other men. Carefully, he explained, Vee’s got such a smooth manner to him, it’s hard to time him in my head. I’ve been working on it, really. I never had a problem like this timing any other horse I’ve ridden, just Vee.
