    Chapter 1

The harlot’s hips undulated in a seductive and hypnotic dance while Doug MacKinloch drained the contents of his tankard and slammed it down on the rough wooden table. The empty mug was removed and immediately replaced with a fresh drink. The tavern owner knew him here. Other patrons this far into their cups would have been cut off hours ago and thrown out into the snow before they caused a ruckus. But not Doug. Anything for the Captain of the Guard.

Doug’s lips curled into a caustic smirk. He was used to getting what he wanted. The other men in the room continued to watch the dancer like panting dogs. She was an attractive woman, no question there. Doug had already taken his pleasure in her more than a dozen times. It had been a meaningless transaction, no different from paying the tavern owner for his drinks.

He was the son of the old laird’s younger brother and the current laird’s only surviving relative. Such a relation gave him prestige among the MacKinlochs without the burden of leadership. With nothing but time on his hands for most of his life he had been free to pursue his one passion: the art of sword fighting. His skills with the two-handed claymore now bordered on legendary. It was whispered that Doug MacKinloch had been born beneath a lucky star. Nothing else could reasonably explain why he had been blessed with so much while others were not.

He took a sloppy gulp from his tankard. Was it lucky to always feel restless? In so many ways he envied the simple farmers who whispered tales of him and his cousin who carried the weight of the world upon his shoulders. They knew their places. They were content.

For as far back as Doug could remember he had never once felt at peace. The MacKinloch lands were comfortable and familiar and, for a time, he wondered if maybe he belonged elsewhere. That question was answered when he had been called to war against the English. The fighting had been brutal, the worst he had ever seen. Illness took just as many as the battleaxes and claymores. Sickened to his very core he had traveled the continent instead of returning straight home. His goal had been to see the best life
