Timbers were swaying in the dark. Lynda’s stomach was heaving as she swayed with the timbers. Dust clouded her vision as she raised a shaky hand to her forehead, damp with sweat. What was happening?

She started coughing as the dust filled her mouth. A cave in! Where was she? Timbers started falling silently at her feet and all around. Tears rolled down her cheeks as they began to fall on her. Horrendous pain flooded her body.

Sinda! Sinda! Where are you, she screamed in the darkness. A blonde braid floated away from her and Sinda ran in front of it calling, Lynda! Catch me! She faded as the dust faded.

Lynda, Lynda! Wake up! Cheri was tugging on Lynda’s arm, trying to wake her.

    What? What?

You’re having a nightmare! Wake up! Jean, their mother, had joined Cheri in trying to wake Lynda from her dream. Consciousness felt groggy.

Her pajamas were soaked with sweat.

Oh, I had the most terrible dream, Lynda cried.

I think that was a nightmare, sweetie. Are you all right now? soothed Mother. Cheri, please get her a glass of water.

Lynda shakily sat up with Jean’s help and wiped the sweat from her face. The nightmare was as real to her as her mother sitting on the bed.

Is Sinda okay? Lynda started to cry. Sinda was somewhere in the dark and we were both in trouble. She grabbed a tissue from the nightstand. Jean got her up to walk. Cheri handed her a glass of water. It was cool to the taste and helped Lynda to really wake up.

Where was I? The noise had awakened Sinda, who came in sleepily clutching one of her dolls. You woke up me and Ginny. She rubbed her eyes and tried to focus on the scene in front of her. Her blonde braids stuck out every which way and her Minnie Mouse pajamas wrinkled around her body.

Calming down was difficult as the scene was so real…

Is Dad home yet? sniffed Lynda.

No, he’s still working. He had the night shift at the precinct tonight over in South San Francisco. He’ll be home soon, replied Jean. Don’t worry about him, sweetie.

Their father, Larry, was a policeman in San Francisco and had been shot by a suspect two years ago. He had recovered physically, but they all were left nervous with mental scars.

Lynda soon felt better, surrounded by her family. Her mother had called her father and that helped as well.

Later on in bed that night, Lynda wondered why she had that particular dream. Her family was leaving in two days for a short vacation in Nevada. Lynda shivered. Could it mean anything at all?

    CHAPTER 1

Are we there yet, Daddy? Sinda was sitting between her parents on the front seat of their car. She was busy combing her doll Annabelle’s hair and pulling up the doll’s new pink socks.

Larry smiled at his youngest daughter, No, sweetheart. You know we just left San Francisco an hour ago. Don’t you remember going over the Bay Bridge and then through Oakland?

For Pete’s sake, Sinda! Don’t you ever pay attention to anything? came Cheri’s rebuke from the back seat. Cheri was working on her Social Studies class assignment and had little patience for her little sister.

Now Cheri, began Jean, their mother. There’s no need to start bickering. Could we please have one trip where you two get along?

Jean looked over her shoulder at her middle daughter and gave her a stern look. These two couldn’t be more different! Cheri was serious and studious, while Sinda was perky and flighty. Cheri had pretty short blonde hair and wore white glasses, and Sinda had beautiful long blonde hair that was usually combed into braids.

Mom, are we going to stay in Reno or Virginia City? asked Lynda as she frowned at Cheri. As the oldest of the three girls, Lynda always felt it was her
