Citizens openly lose their minds in public view from a mysterious pathogen known as the Spell, and a street drug offers the only reprieve from its madness.

      Vershinin let out a cloud of cigarette smoke into the frigid air and stepped in place to ward the chill off his booted feet. His gaze spanned the width of the buffer zone beyond the narrow window of the bunker, the walls topped with barbed wire behind which loomed the object of his younger colleague’s inquiry: a black, multi-tiered structure outlined against a bleak, leaden sky, two colossal ramps leading from the foot to the domed summit. It brought to memory the black-and-white photos from old history textbooks, images of temples built to honor savage gods at the dawn of civilization. A bitter smile played on his lips. The ancients had built temples to imagined deities; the New Soviet Man had trapped a real one beneath tens of thousands of tons of lead and concrete, right here on the Motherland’s easternmost bulwark.
