In most organizations, you won’t be perceived as a leader unless you’re perceived as a strong, compelling communicator. But here’s the rub: the history of public speaking has been dominated by men. Does this mean that for women to be successful, they must lead—and speak—like men? Edith Poor says no. In Voicework, she argues that only when we understand the bias against the female voice will we be able to eliminate it. This bias is so pervasive that even women themselves don’t know what their own voices sound like. But they can find out. When they do, their capacity for leadership is heightened—even transformed. Edith Poor helps business leaders think, write, and speak more clearly. She has over twenty years’ experience helping executives master the printed and spoken word. Her clients include leaders in consulting, higher education, financial services, computer technology, telecommunications, and health care. In addition to working as a consultant, Edith Poor is the author of The Executive Writer: A Guide to Managing Words, Ideas, and People (Grove Weidenfeld, 1992; Montemayor Press, 2008), a book on the links between good writing and leadership.
