I'm Rachel Mathews and I've been a professional garden designer for over 20 years. I'm based in the UK but do work internationally for clients in the USA, Australia, Malaysia, North Africa, Spain and Switzerland. Over the years I've designed every size, shape and style of garden. My passion lately is to create modern gardens with a natural feel, whilst incorporating plenty of edible foods. In 2009 I did an online teacher training programme so I could learn how to teach garden design and since then I have been writing and teaching garden design to a worldwide audience via the Successful Garden Design website.I'm currently taking a year out from my design and construction business to write another 3 ebooks and mini-garden design courses. I've fled the UK to the warmer climates of southern Spain; the warm weather definitely helps the writing process you know!

Introduction (well the pre-intro, intro)
So you do not waste your time, read this FIRST!
Before we get going I want to address the comments this book has received. Judging by the some of the reviews, it doesn’t look like people have read the book description or the book title. So, just in case you’ve downloaded this in a rush let me quickly tell you what it’s about so you don’t waste time reading something that’s not applicable to you.
This book is a BIG picture overview of the process of successfully creating a beautiful garden. Think of it as a travel map. And think of me as the helpful tourist information officer who tells you how to get to your dream destination, without getting mugged on the way!
I’ve been a professional, international, garden designer for over twenty years and I have seen thousands of gardens, and sadly, thousands of costly mistakes. My aim with this book is to help you avoid ALL those mistakes.
Most garden mistakes are made because people are not sure where they should start, so they focus on little details, rather than the bigger picture.
This book explains that bigger picture and points out all your options. You’ll lean what you need to know if you choose to DIY or how to work with professionals, if you’d rather have someone else do it for you.
Just like you wouldn’t expect the person at the tourist information office to teach you how to drive a car, if you wanted to DIY instead of taking a taxi, in this book I’m not going to teach you how to design. ALL my other books cover that, with step-by-step, ‘how-to’ instructions.
So this book is NOT a 'How to' guide, it's a 'What's' guide. I cover 'What's' involved with landscaping a garden so that you can work out the best way forward for your circumstances. Do you know if you want to DIY your garden or hire someone? What are benefits and drawbacks of each option?
If you choose to DIY do you know where to start? Which design principles are important, which are best to ignore? If you choose to hire a professional, do you want them to do everything or are there some parts you could do yourself? If you decide to get a professional in, how do you know who’s good and who’s not?
This book covers all that and more.
Oh and did I mention this book was written for beginners? I know, I cunningly hid the word ‘beginner’ in the sub-title, you’d be amazed how often it’s missed! So, some of the information may be obvious to some and not to others.
That being said, for those of you who do already have some experience with doing a garden and are about to dash off fearing the information in this book will be too basic for you, I have a quick question for you…
Do you REALLY know what makes the difference between a fabulous looking garden and a frankly, foul one?
Think about that for a mo.
I bet you don’t. Not really.
A wrong assumption
Now let’s address the reviewers
