This book is a work of fiction and any resemblance to persons, living or dead, or places, events or locales is purely coincidental. The characters are productions of the author’s imagination and used fictitiously

    Chapter 1

The sky was cloudy, though the sun splashes on black clouds could dull and gloomy. Melvis was tired. Luckily his turn in the intensive care unit was almost at the end.

Before leaving he wanted to see his patients. Those suspended between life and death, and those who would not have arrived at the end of the day.

He took off his green gown. He was in a state of nonsense then briskly walked to his office.

He was just putting his things in order when the nurse broke Capaldo.

    What? He asked.

Capaldo was breathing hard. He could not speak, then...

Professor! ... There is an emergency! Dr. Lebosco alone cannot do it, reported the chubby Italian-American nurse.

Melvis was unimpressed; the rest was his job to rush in the most desperate cases, even though he would rather be out of the hospital already.

We should take the elevator that leads to the hallway where there was scientific laboratory, maybe we will do first, advised Melvis.

"Professor! ... That area is off .No one goes there and then the elevator who knows if it works," he asked the nurse.

Nonsense! ... The elevator is efficient, encouraged him Melvis and gave him a pat on the shoulder.

Saratoga Hospital is one of the best burn centers of America, there are at the forefront in this type of pathology. In addition many interventions are practiced in this hospital for organ transplantation, but unfortunately when it was built, there were some misunderstandings of the project and the local, intended to emergency rooms, was built detached from the main body of the hospital and this was a big handicap.

The building of the emergency room was shaped like a pentagon.

If he chose another path, Melvis would have to travel almost three hundred and fifty meters, so about two hundred meters.

The elevator was still efficient, although a clearly visible sign indicating danger. The nurse waited Melvis came before crushing, the button corresponding to the red number one: he was afraid of being trapped in the canister.

The underground section of the hospital is located about five feet from the street level, and much of this area is used as a morgue.

We should shed light on this area, said Melvis when the doors opened.

The long hallway was dimly lit.

I had warned, but ... muttered the nurse.

Capaldo felt beneath the sole of the right foot something soft. He thought he had stepped on a roach instead had put his foot on a small mouse.

Showed no disgust for this episode, without thinking, simply kicked it away from him: there had to be a good number in that building.

Melvis seemed not to care about that and continued to walk down the aisle self-confident, full of dust and surrounded by all types of waste, illuminated intermittently by small lamps in low light.

They got to the point where, on the one hand we are moving towards the two premises, used in scientific laboratories, for all abandoned and not working for some time. In fact, few knew that these premises were fully functional and intended for experiments on bodies of all kinds of people , unknown and without family, mostly homeless , so that in those places there was an indefinite number of dead bodies , and the other hand to the local emergency room.

Of course, beyond the premises of the science lab, the corridor also came to the emergency room but the road was much longer.

    Melvis chose the shortest way.

It seems clear that the elevator was not used because no one had interest used to cross that area abandoned hospital; instead there were other elevators that reached the basement, where there were services.

Capaldo, when he opened the door firmly , rusted by time and dripping with blood coagulated and small flaps of skin and human tissue, was struck by the warmth and light.

Before introducing, Melvis pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and passed it on leather shoes, covered with dust.

Accident! ... It was an accident? This is really bad tanned , informed Lebosco, and lifted his morale, as soon as John came up.

Melvis watched his clinical gaze of the great scientist and man lying on a bed in the emergency room and realized that the situation was serious and desperate.

The professor locked eyes compassionate and humble man.

He smiled as if to reassure him. The man was trying to tell him something. Melvis came to feel better and soon after moved away.

"Soon! Do not waste any more time. Deliver him in the operating room Fire life and I think that also has injuries to internal organs, "he ordered Melvis.

I do not think there is time to get there, said Lebosco, sadly.

Yes, maybe he's right. It's okay. O.K. okay. Does that mean it will work here, although we do without part of the machinery of life?

    Yeah, okay

    Which room is free?

The three of them. The operating room number three is free, he reported, promptly, Capaldo.

O.K. It's okay. We will work at three, confirmed Melvis.

The teacher heard the fire coursing through his veins to the subtle pleasure that he had had to win another battle.

A challenge against the death that already hung in the air and that at times you would be placed on the body of the man.

Gloves, he ordered Melvis, after having washed your hands thoroughly.

The young nurse came over. He put his gloves, and took the coat from the cabinet sterilized and waited for the teacher to wear it.

After the nurse left, he knew that the professor had to be left alone at that time for the rite that was a good omen before each surgery of some importance.

Now he was alone. Stood in front of the mirror. He looked good for his face and began to focus: look at a fixed point of his own brain.

Melvis! ... Melvis, cried several times. You have to do it. To you it is not allowed any mistakes

He raised his hands to heaven and held still for a little of time before his eyes.

And as he said these words, his face was fiery, as if all the blood in the body arrived in an instant to his face.

His eyes had a something sinister.

    Suddenly his face darkened.

The color of fire and blood drained from his face, giving way to a white coating and olive.

He was sad ... and desperate.

What the hell was happening to him?

Oh, God! Oh, my God! Why? Because ... my hands shake? Under these conditions I will never perform the surgery, he shouted.

It was thus ended the mission of Professor Melvis?

Maybe he was tired from having worked a lot that day, the rest had performed many surgeries: for sure ten or perhaps had other things on my mind.

It was nothing serious happened, his hands were still efficient. There was no need to dramatize, just had to put off his game with death.

With a gesture of annoyance took off his surgical gloves and threw them angrily into the rubbish bin.

Defeated, he entered the operating room even with the mask on the mouth.

Lebosco, when he saw him without gloves, shuddered at the very thought of having to do it alone.

Warn Bluwhite. It is better than the intervention him to execute it. I'm tired. And then I have other fish to fry, he said Melvis, which is not lost even on this occasion it looks safe and reassuring.

Well, Professor. J will call Bluwhite. I saw a while ago. It should not be far away. Do not worry. You will see that we will be able to save him, he assured him Lebosco, who was a student of his very well-liked and who was also a close friend of his wife Caroline.

Melvis not answer. He remained for
