All I could do was stand there. Trying to think, just trying to get things straight in my head while keeping my nerves at bay, I couldn’t help wondering if things would ever get better. A lawyer on her own, working on whatever cases I could scrounge up, maybe this time I’d bitten off one hell of a lot more than I could chew.

I was more than a little bit desperate for money and clients, and way out of my depth on this case. Unlike the defense team, I didn’t have a second chair or even a paralegal to fall back on – and I had the nerve to want justice – imagine that. Standing here in front of a judge who was looking at me like I was something he’d scraped off the bottom of his shoe, I was a whole lot desperate for the evidence that would help me pull this one out of the fire. This case was a big one for me, a make or break one, and I just hoped I wasn’t going to be hung out on this limb alone.

He wouldn’t do that to me. Would he?

Eyes on the heavy solid wood double doors at the back of the courtroom, a nagging part of my brain reminded me of who I really was: a woman on her own, placing her trust in one man. The trust I gave him was fragile and played on a margin of fear because one of the men I’d begun this case partnered with was already dead and gone.

I was pretty much working without a net and I had never trusted a man the way I was trusting
