    Prologue

Wet wind pushed across Wenterwill’s rolling hills of rainbow-colored wheat. It was a summer storm and it brought lightning that streaked a crooked line from a darkened sky with thunderous vengeance. Every window in the small community of Barfoo was tightly shuttered, and at the center of town atop Karnberry Hill, the unusual weather was having its way with an old abandoned house.

In a tight crawlspace beneath the aging structure, rain flooded through a widened crack in the foundation like it was conquering new territory. The intrusion of so much moisture spelled disaster to a panicky yellow spinspider. Soon, her usual dry world would be awash with rainwater.

That bothered her, bothered her a lot.

She hated water worse than she disliked the cold, and that’s a lot of dislike. Cold stiffens up the legs, but water can drown a spider. That’s why she built her sticky snares indoors, where water wasn’t supposed to reach.

    And, it hadn’t, until now.

The spinspider was clearly distraught. That’s because water was everywhere, soaking up the dust and clinging to her webs. Some were washed away entirely. Most were beyond her reach for now because she was too frightened to move. Oh, how she hated water!

Help! a frightened voice cried out from across the crawlspace. Help!

Hush up! she responded in a terse spidery voice. I’m busy!

A surge of water sloshed through the crawlspace, pushed through a web nearby and tore loose.

You’ve got to listen! the voice complained again, only louder and more urgent. I’m drowning?

No, you’re whining again, said the spider, but she took notice. Finally, glancing at all the water, she ignored the damage to her snares and scampered upside down across the sagging floor to where she had left the tomebeetle, only partially wrapped and just waiting to be the biggest meal ever. The large beetle was her lucky snare. With all the excitement, she had nearly forgotten about him.

To her surprise, the lower half of his body was indeed submerged. And the water appeared to be rising. The beetle held the book he had been reading from over his head and pleaded for her to hurry with his many eyes.

For a brief moment, the yellow spinspider had a notion to seek the high ground where it was dry and let him drown. But it was the book that stopped her.

She snared the tomebeetle in her sticky snare fair and square. But there was a snag to the catch that she hadn’t expected: the book the beetle kept in the tattered knapsack he carried.

The tomebeetle called the book ‘Tales of Tossledowns’. It was a collection of stories he’s picked up in his travels. She was a spider and normally she would have ignored the book. She normally wouldn’t have agreed to his barter for a bit of her time with a story, either, but she did. That’s because it had been a long time since anyone had dared visit
