About this ebook
When a little girl loses her cat, Vex takes up the case to help hunt it down again. Although her motives aren't as pure as she lets on--the cat isn't any ordinary cat, but a dangerous shapseshifting monster posing as a domestic furry friend.
The cat has already killed a man and risks are high. But how could this work out? Does Vex have to disappoint Holly over her beloved pet?

I've always disliked introductions—they make me uncomfortable. I'm used to listening, smiling… These always involve too much talking. I could copy and paste something I already have, I'm sure, but I suppose that would be cheating anyone reading. And that wouldn't be fun at all. Should it be posh or vulgar? Crystalline and perfect in reception or scrawled out with the grace of a child with crayons and chalk… I guess that both would fit equally well, but truthfully, I'd rather avoid the clever. So posh it is. So a metaphor came to me, let's try an introduction like mixing a drink. All the elements are there: first a spirit—whiskey, rum; second something for substance—soda, juice; and finally perhaps flavor—ice, mint, cinnamon-snap. So the substance… I live in Michigan during the summer and Arizona during the winter, rather particularly like a snowbird, except that I don't drive. And I don't quite adhere to that schedule either, I just have friends split between those states and I work in Phoenix. I am Irish by heritage but demure by demeanor. I dress in black because of tradition. I expect to die of heart failure, unless my friends somehow find me immortality. So some flavor… My favorite author is Mary Woolstonecraft Shelley, further that I'll oft' refer to her as my adopted mother. I love reading, always have book on my desk, in my pocket, at hand, or simply tucked/tied/wrapped to my notebook and pen. I like Goth Industrial music and Harsh EBM, folk, rock, Celtic. VNV Nation, Covenant, Blutengel, In Strict Confidence, Qntal, and myriad manifold others. And finally the spirit… I am an author—and a glowing one at that; I also write poetry—but nothing worth mentioning. I like street corners and thunderstorms, small furry creatures and libraries, the sound of a thousand feet walking and the smell of morning after a long night. I'll try not to wax poetic. I am a healer, ex-medic; now if only I could keep everyone from breaking themselves. Most importantly: I love people. Too clever, I suppose, but hopefully entertaining naetheless.

Monster hunting had taken a turn for the strange.
Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.
Vex Harrow’s taxicab idled by the curb and the wind whipped raindrops through her fingers as she nailed the sign onto the telephone poll. Sign number twenty. Holly Taylor—her newest fare, a girl of eleven, owner of Augustus Caesar—held the sign steady. In spite of the rain, and Vex’s command to stay in the cab, the little girl insisted on having part in every bit of the sign posting process. Even now that she was shivering, her blonde hair turned dark with damp.
Twenty more signs waited in the back seat, laminated and neatly stacked. But this one was the last for today.
We should get you back home,
Vex said. I don’t think your mother meant for me to have you out in the rain.
For once in the past two days, Holly didn’t argue about quitting early.
Terrified. Alone. Cold—wet—hungry. Hiding. Danger. Stay hidden. The hunger grows.
Holly beat Vex to the front door and flung it open; welcoming light flooded out. Vex stepped into it and closed the door behind her. The dry interior embraced her like an old friend as she peeled her wet coat off from her clammy arms. The room couldn’t have been more warmly appointed even if it had included a fireplace—something few sane houses in Phoenix included. The past three times she’d placed boot inside, Vex had imagined Holly, with her mother and father—and kitty cat, Augustus Caesar—lounging about the living room reading or watching TV.
If the family had known what secrets their housecat held, they would have lost
him long ago.
Would you like something warm to drink?
Mrs. Taylor asked from the kitchen. I have lots of kinds of tea—organic and fair trade.
Mrs. Taylor. A casual fare who had found her way into Vex’s cab more than two dozen times over the past few years. Doctors appointments mostly.
