    Chapter 1

Cora Rosach examined the bleeding soldier in front of her with an expert and convincingly dispassionate eye. He had been dropped unceremoniously on the floor of her cottage, his comrades-in-arms breathing heavily from having to drag so large a man all the way to her hut. The man’s left leg was bent at an unnatural angle. His angular features and sandy blond hair would have been handsome had they not been marred by what appeared to be a sharp blow to the head.

Can you fix him, Cora? the younger of the two soldiers asked.

I’ll certainly do what I can. Help me take him to my patient bed.

The two men looked at each other, shrugged, then hefted the injured soldier into the indicated room. The room was regarded as a peculiarity by most who visited. Its walls were lined with shelves containing hundreds of jars of various herbs and remedies. The only other furniture being a low, simple bed that Cora used for surgical procedures and stool.

What happened? Cora asked while helping to situate the man on the bed.

A Campbell raid, the older of the two spat out in disgust.

    Still?

Aye. You’d think his supporters would have given up now that that spawn of Satan has met his maker. But they still persist. Hiding out in caves like wild animals. They’re getting more aggressive too now that the first frost has set in. The lieutenant here was taken by surprise while leading our patrol. It’s one thing to steal livestock but the cowards didn’t even have the spine to face us like men.

Cora nodded her understanding, trying to keep her emotions on a tight lead. I’ll do what I can for him. He’s lost a great deal of blood. I’ll have to see if I can save the limb or not.

The two soldiers headed to the door. Send for us if there’s anything we can do for the lieutenant, the younger said earnestly. Anything at all.

    I will.

With that she closed the door and leaned heavily upon the sturdy wooden frame. Two hot tears slipped out and trickled down her cheek. Crying would not do Evan any good at this point. She had to be strong and clear-headed if he was going to survive this night.

    Bracing herself she walked back
