About the Authors
INTRODUCTION
A popular book suggests that you don’t worry about the small stuff. We agree, but we take exception to any idea that the small stuff isn’t important. In fact, we want to encourage you to closely examine and value the seemingly everyday, ordinary circumstances of your life. Why? Because God is in the details of your life.
Marriage has been called a sacred treasure. Others see it as nothing more than a social contract. We happen to believe the first description for one very simple reason: Marriage is God’s idea. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and people. Adam and Eve were the first couple, designed to enjoy each other and glorify God. Realizing that God had done this, the author of Genesis exclaimed:
This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.
—GENESIS 2:24
A lot has changed since those days, but marriage is still the process that unites a husband and wife. Notice we said process. Much more than a simple I do
and a legal pronouncement, marriage is a living, breathing, ongoing relationship that changes two people for the better and affects all those around them.
God isn’t just interested in your marriage ceremony, even though you are wise to include Him. And He isn’t there only when you call upon Him in a time of need, although He promises to answer. God is involved in every detail of your lives, for your benefit and for the good of your marriage.
That’s why we have titled this book, God Is in the Small Stuff for Your Marriage. It’s true! He’s there for you every step of the way: when you say, I do,
when you find great happiness, when you experience difficult times, when your children arrive, and when you grow old together. No matter what you do, no matter where you go, God is there.
I can never escape from your spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the place of the dead, you are there.
If I ride the wings of the morning,
if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
even there your hand will guide me,
and your strength will support me.
—PSALM 139:7-10
This book contains fifty-two essays that reflect on God’s involvement in the circumstances of your marriage. Maybe you’ve been married for a while. Perhaps you are a newlywed, or marriage may be in your future. Your marriage may be the best it’s ever been or on the rocks.
Whatever your situation, we want you to know that God cares about the small stuff for your marriage.
Oswald Chambers wrote: We can all see God in exceptional things, but it requires the growth of spiritual discipline to see God in every detail.
May this book help you and your spouse as you grow together spiritually.

LOVE AND ROMANCE
ONE
THINKING OF YOU
T here is an old joke about a husband and wife who visit a marriage counselor on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. When asked the reason for their visit, the wife complains: In twenty-five years of marriage, my husband has never said ‘I love you’ to me.
The husband retorts: I said ‘I love you’ at the wedding ceremony, and that stays in effect until I revoke it.
This joke evokes some laughter from husbands and wives, but it is mostly nervous laughter (because there is a lot of painful truth in this little joke).
One of the quickest ways to choke the romance out of marriage is to take each other for granted. Don’t let that happen. Keep the romance in your marriage alive by letting your spouse know that you are so much in love that you can’t stop thinking about him or her. Find ways to remind your spouse that he or she occupies your thoughts even though your schedules keep you separated most of the day.
During the phases of dating, courtship, and engagement, you and your spouse probably spent most of your day thinking about each other. And you probably let each other know it, too. Phone calls, notes, and endless conversations were evidence that you were always thinking of each other. But with marriage comes familiarity, and while familiarity doesn’t always breed contempt (with apologies to Ben Franklin or whoever made that famous quote), familiarity does often bring routine. And in the routine of life we often forget to let our spouse know that he or she remains a priority in our lives—and in our thoughts throughout the day.
Take a lesson from God Himself. He knew human nature. And He knew that Moses and the Israelites could quickly forget about God in the midst of their
